Juvy hunt question

As we all know, juvenile weekends are strictly for the kids.

In KY, you can continue to hunt throughout the juvy weekends.
You just have to abide by the blaze orange laws as if you were gun hunting.

Funny story, last year man killed his biggest buck ever but I will fully admit the deer fooled me because of the angle he was standing at and he wasn't as big as I thought he was when I told man to shoot.
Anyway, THREE minutes later a shooter 9 point (135-140") walked out at 40 yards.
I had laid my bow back down because it just didn't feel right taking it when the weekend was about him.
Bad call....

So, how do you feel about it?
Should everyone be able to hunt during juvy?

No way. Take your kids and get out there.If you wanna hunt and you don't have your own children go find a kid and get him/her interested. There are lots of kids that would love to go but don't have anybody to take them. It's all about the kids.

Ruger...I would have shot it. Man got his and it's not like 140's walk by all the time. If it's legal and it makes you happy it's missiles away!

I say yes, because its not right to not let hunters, who do not have youths to take hunting, not hunt. Youth season(rifle) in KY is during bow season so it really doesnt bother anything for others to be bow hunting.

I say "No" because what TWRA does with the Juvi hunts is pretty unique. I speak with hunters from other states and think it's awesome that TN sets aside special days for Juvenile hunters and makes those days especially for them.

If people can hunt during the Juvi weekends, then what is different about those days than every other hunting day?

I voted no because I want it to be all about my son and the other kids on those days. Having said that I've never thought about it and would have no problem with adults hunting too on private land. After all not everyone has young kids or kids that hunt. Public land should be for the kids only. Just my $0.02.

If I understood the question, you are asking if you should have shot the other buck and if that is the question, then I say YES.

First......you allowed Man to kill his buck first. You, in no way, prevented him from achieving his goal and how much cooler does it get for a father and son to both take a buck on the same hunt? A rare experience indeed, imo.

Now...if you had seen a 200 inch deer and you stopped Man from shooting and you shot him instead well then I would say that you suck and you are a bad father....lol. However, I do not believe that to be the case.

Once he shoots his buck, his day is pretty much over....imo. A "double" would have been so cool!

Oh and by the way, have you talked to Man about this and what did he say about it?

No. Kids deserve every break they can get to get them involved in the outdoors. Not too much to ask to let up for a couple days for the kids sake imo.

I would have to say for the kids. I know that if i was a kid and someone took me i would have probably have not went back if there was hunters in trees every fifty acres. A deer walks out and it is a cloud of gun smoke, would have made me not get into hunting. It is about connecting with nature and teaching your skills for the younger generation to pass along, kind of like a carbon fingerprint. That and also teaching survival skills in the zombie apocalypse, why i have crossbow ( Daryl wanta be lol).


However there is limitations for survival, like if this came out it would be every man/woman for their selves lol.

I voted that the weekend should be for the kids. However, if in your situation, I would have carried my bow and shot the deer with no regret considering that my son had already tagged out. That would have been awesome to double like that.

I agree, and answered as such on the poll.

However, I'm not so sure that 2nd juvenile hunt in January remains a good idea. The first one is great, the 2nd one can not only turn a young hunter against deer hunting, but it may be taking away from some small-game opportunities that could possibly help get a youth more into hunting period.

Keep in mind that just because the juvenile hunt is going on that weekend in January, many people avoid going small game hunting, maybe knocking more youth out of an opportunity for small game than actually participate in the January juvenile deer hunt.

Let's also not overlook that juveniles are free to hunt every day their parents/mentors have available as well, so by the time that January juvenile date comes around, many have lost interest and often experience nothing but cold weather sitting on a deer stand in January. (I'm sure there's going to be a lot of pics posted now of what some youth killed in January last year, but that doesn't change the generalization just because there's a few exceptions.)

[size]Its for the kids. PERIOD!!!! [/size]How many kids would miss out because a parent or some other selfish individual would NOT take a kid just so they could hunt. IF you have never been with a kid when they got to kill a deer, you are really missing out on something. Find a kid to take, I have to figure out how to take 3 this year. happy happy happy.

I say no as well... it's not right for me to expect to be able to hunt just a couple of weekends out of the year when I get the whole rest of the season to hunt. Nothing wrong with just a few days aside to get the kids in the woods without any other hunters interfering.

I agree it is for the kids and would say NO on WMAs but if you have private land, don't have kids, and won;t be taking any, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to go with your bow.

To be clear I am not just talking about land owners, but anyone with access to Private land that has ZERO chance of a youth hunting there.

I think it is a very unique oppurtunity that TN provides. Closing down grown up people season to let the kids have the woods to themselves with no pressure from big kid hunters.

But I do not see what would be a problem with somebody bowhunting on private property. There are far fewer bowhunters so it isn't like the woods would be crowded. I just say this because I only get to hunt weekends. If I had a kid old enough I'd take them though. I guess I will either not go that weekend or find somewhere in AL to hunt.

Not everybody can hunt any day they want. If a guy set aside the juvy weekend for his child and then gets the chance to hunt himself or even take his child while he hunts, he should have that option. There are many scenarios that could play out. I just think hunters should have options. There is nothing selfish about having those options.

I agree. If I could hunt any day I wanted, I am sure my opinion would be different.
O well it is the rules and it really don't matter. Wish I could hunt that weekend, but not going to gripe too much about it.

Absolutely should remain exclusively for the kids!! Its been that way for decades and no adult has the excuse that they 'planned' to deer hunt that wknd, as its been closed to adults for decades! BOTH Juvenile hunts should definitely stay kids only, as the kids are our future of hunting and taking 2 wknds for just them is nothing if it gets a few more hooked each yr!
I have never understood, even before I had kids, how any adult would want to take any chance at all in limiting a kids opportunity!
