Had a slow Saturday morning but knew there was a big group of does hitting this field in the mornings on their way to bed. Sure enough, here they came down the road bed behind us and then circled the shooting house. Little fellow (late friend's son) has killed one deer (never forget that one) and it was a button.
I had some fun with him by making him wait but honestly, the bigger doe is at least 6 and we've been after her for years. She has a bad eye, easy to notice.
I finally, before he had a heart attack, gave him the green light on the doe in the field. The other two were determined to stay in the pines. He rolled her. We reloaded and sure enough, out pops #2 and after finally screaming at her, she stopped broadside and I gave him the green light again. That one was a short 30 yard tracking job and was good for him also.
He gutted deer #2 and skinned one himself after watching me. He's learning for sure. I just wish I'd had my video camera so you could have heard a nervous 12yr old telling me he couldn't breath and he couldn't quit shaking and me telling him to calm down. He didn't think it was funny that I made him be patient.
