Just hunt is always my dads comment when the conversation starts about rut, pre rut, oct lull, and 2nd rut.Which is true no matter what the conditions are all of us on here is going to hunt every opportunity we get regardless of what phase we are in at the time. But it is still good conversation just dont have it around my dad. Lol So next your sitting around wondering what phase we are in and whether you should go or not just remember .......JUST HUNT!

Yep. I have always had the mindset that the best time to hunt is when I can. Maybe someday if I retire I will become more particular.

It depends on what your goal is. If your goal is to sit in a tree and watch the sunrise, hunting without regard to seasonal changes and wind direction is fine.

disagree atleast for mature deer... the best luck you will have is putting what you can control in your favor and then tree stand time. got to dot you i's and cross your t's with mature deer.

I'll agree that you can't kill him from the couch but sometimes the worst thing you can do is climb into your stand at the wrong time.

Hunting every chance you get will do nothing but increase your chances of success if you hunt smart each time and don't do something you KNOW is wrong.

How can you control mature deer?? I know you can try to control your sent you can scout and put yourself in a good location but outside of that everything else is out of control. Just seat time...JUST HUNT

It just depends on your goal as stated above. Hunting mature deer is different than just hunting deer.

Just do what makes you happy. To me that's what hunting is about.

You can't control mature deer but you can out the odds in your favor. I agree with what your saying sometimes we over think it. But a lot of times with mature deer you have to. Control what you can control sometimes seat time is the worst thing you can do. Got to hunt smart still. IMO you make your own luck.

You're right, unless I have one tied to a tree I cannot control the day to day movement and motivations of any animal  . However, your original question stated (paraphrased)... when it comes to deer what at all can you control? I submit to you I am in control of my actions which have a direct effect on my success while hunting and there is way more involved for me than just scent control and stand location that helps me up the odds of the kill.

Bad weather, wind, rain, they don't go home, this is their home! They are out here somewhere! That is what I tell my Grandson when we talk about hunting in unfavorable weather.

time in the stand is what I can control best and that is how I kill my mature deer. of course the stand has to be in the right place but once it is I just hunt. I find a bow spot, hang stand. find a ML spot, hang stand. gun spot, hang stand.

You have my attention BlountArrow besides they things that we have mentioned that we have control of what are the other things that helps you up the odds of the kill???

I feel like that myself M338. Kinda lost cause trying to hunt wind in these hollers around here. It's going to swirl around and change several times a day. I normally just hunt where they are using the most if I can find good sign. And try to be as clean as possible.

I'll assume this is a genuine question so I'll give you a genuine answer. I can control when I hunt, where I hunt, how I hunt, hunting pressure that myself and members of my party create (private property mainly of course), scent control (been mentioned), noise level (kind of back to pressure), the habitat (private property), and food in the form of food plots - but I definitely think food plots are over-rated and I would probably consider them to be on the bottom of the list of everything I just mentioned.

Personally, I'll admit that I'm not a good enough hunter yet to intercept the wary, primarily nocturnal buck as he moves to and from his bedding area during those few moments of daylight. So, here's what I do and it works for me. When I'm after a mature buck I do not hunt that deer until I'm confident he is moving around more and more during daylight hours. How can I know this? Well, trail cam pictures for one helps me more than anything. My brother and I have a strict policy we pretty much do not hunt a particular piece of property until we see daytime photos of mature bucks and for us that very, very rarely happens before the end of the first week of November. Obviously, the rut is usually about to kick in and that has them moving - at that point they are "killable" for me. Prior to all this daylight movement I mentioned above we might bow hunt a little on the perimeter but I'm talking like once or twice and we are sure to create as minimal disturbance as possible. It took me a long time to figure this out and it works for us, but it's not for everybody.

exactly, if I hunted west TN in flat country I would hunt the wind but here it is dang near impossible. it will come from several directions all day long and on top of that in places I hunt a deer can come from any direction at any time so what good would it do anyways. just find a good spot and hunt the heck out of it.

i know a lot of hunters on here talk about over hunting a area but i can prove that at least for me that is not the case. i hunt several days in a row from the same stand and kill big deer every year. i could see where certain areas such as small timber lots in ag areas wouldn't be like that though.

It was a genuine questions and i appreciate your answer. But your answer doesnt unlock key for killing mature deer. All of your points that you do are very valid and i would think that most of us hunt very similar to what you do and all of us are very unsuccessful when it comes to kill mature bucks! Tn numbers prove that. That leads me back to this we all as hunters try to give ourselves the upper hand and do all the things that we know we need to do to up our odds but try to control mature bucks is impossible!! Thats why i say just hunt... given you will do all the things right you know to do how many of us successful day in and day out on killing 3.5 older bucks? Only way i know to up the success rate is seat time! More times your butt is in the stand and not always the same stand the rate will increase.

AM, if there is a one stop, fail proof, key or magic potion for killing deer I haven't found it. When I read your first post it came across to me as that everything is blind luck and we have no control over anything and I don't believe that.

Ever heard the phrase id rather be lucky than good?? Its all about the odds and the only way to up those odds is to JUST HUNT! Yes i know we have to do this and this and this and it will help us kill this big ole monster we are after. Seat time seat time
