Via email from LA, somebody was fishing below (I think) the Black River spillway and caught a 200# aligator gar. Don't know if it was actually weighed or any details but I have never heard of an alligator gar that big in that river.

when i was around 9-11 years old our neighbors had a fish market. i would go with the boys to run the hoop nets to catch catfish but sometimes we would bring long gill nets and set them out way back in a oil location canal. we would catch gars so big we could not get them in the boat. we would tie them off the side and idle back to home. later in life when i bought my first boat i took a trip to last island and did some night fishing next to a oilrig. i caught a aligator gar that night that was over 8 feet long. i never weighed it but ide bet it was around 200 pounds. i traded that fish for some sweet potatoe pieS.

They get big. I hit one with a boat in the Atachafalya that almost got three of us killed. We were in a 17-foot cypress skiff that was four feet wide and it dang near turned it over. I have no idea how big it was but our first thought was alligator, not gar.

I also saw one hanging from a tree down in Pecan island that was every bit of eight feet.
