I am not trolling, only putting info out.

It's a Knight American 50 cal, came with a Simmons 8 point scope. The bore's fine, and the breech plug and nipple both come out reasonably easy. The rifle was taken good care of, and I got it off a buddy from college for $100.

I will be candid. I have had all sorts of muzzle loaders, none of which were particularly reliable, and this will probably be their last chance. If THIS one winds up hanging fire and proving impossible to keep from rusting, I am done with rifles that load from the wrong end and will just wait to hunt til the 3rd weekend of November. Questions follow:

1) I hear a lot about alternatives to Holy Black, but Clearshot rusted guns about as badly as Pyrodex or Holy Black. How are the current crop?

2) I have been advised to convert the piece to 209 primers, but havr seen a lot of talk that that's not particularly wise. Why would I NOT want to get as much fire to the charge as I could?

3) I still have a good supply of round balls from my last muzzleloader, a T/C New Englander. Will they shoot adequately through this rifle?

Have one very similar and I use 2 50 grain pyrodex pellets and saboted 300 grain hornady xtps. Shoots great and never a hang fire with musket caps. It's a simple conversion but you will need a new nipple removal tool.

Although your round ball might shoot adequately your rifle with a twist if 1 in 28 is really designed for a heavy conical bullet. As ADR said I think you will get a lot more accuracy and performance going this route. Ive heard good things said about most Knights.

Good points already. Too much twist for round balls. Regarding noncorrosive powders, I've heard it's not safe for BH 209 with the open breech. Great gun, though. I had a MK85 which was nearly identical and shot 300 grain saboted BARNES Mz's over a couple of 50 grain Pyrodex pellets. Converted from caps to rifle primers and never had a misfire. Clean ASAP after shooting with 777, Pyrodex, or BP and you shouldn't have any issues.

A 1/28 twist was made to shoot sabots though they may shoot any bullet good with the rite powder load. The traditional shot the conical bullets with the slow twist better , it cost $ to find what they shoot some times but its all a part of the game
