Should one need to grow their own food at some point, where are some good places to buy seeds and what are some ways to store seeds for a long period of time for later planting.... say up to a year or so?

I grew tomato seeds this year that were saved in jewelry sized zip lock bags in a jar for 2 or 3 years. Putting them in a freezer will make them keep even longer. Just keep them dry at all times and away from heat. Tons of online seed stores to buy from, also the Co-op has bulk packages

catman pretty much nailed it. Co-op or any farm store have good selections in season and usually have left over seed at the end of the season, just don't expect to see the seeds you wanted on the shelves late though.
I have planted seeds that have been in the freezer for many years and they have done well. You can also store seeds in the seed pack and kept dry for several seasons and expect them to sprout.
