Caught yesterday below Cordell Hull trolling crankbaits

This was 18" and I released two short sauger. Fishing was really slow but I finally managed the 3 around midday before the generators came on. I met up with eyeseeker the night before and neither of us did any good night fishing. Caught some sleep and then went back to fishing early morning. He caught a 18" and a real big 9+ pound walleye. I couldn't even catch a dang catfish below the dam. But at least a few of the good ones were biting.

the world record was caught not too terribly far downstream form where we were fishing, it was 25 pounds.
 
You're in for a treat. Those are some fine tasting fish. I don't know much about fishing for them but I did catch one totally on accident at the most improbable time a couple summers ago. Middle of the day in August, floating in the Caney in my kayak jigging a pink trout magnet off the bottom. 18" and went right into the coconut oil.

I've seen one almost get caught in the caney and they are definitely up in there, they love cool water, but I haven't yet caught any up there or really tried much.

I was fortunate enough to have been at a fish fry where they fried up channel cat, flathead cat, crappie, and sauger. I got to taste test all side by side. My favorite was the flathead over the channel and the sauger over the crappie. Sauger tastes a lot like walleye. Good eating.

I believe your results may have been skewed. Cold water caught fish normally are firmer and taste better. I think cold water to be 52 or less.

You were probably easting fish that were all caught at 60+ degrees.

Crappie at 60 are not as good as crappie at 45.

Catfish at 50 would be awesome, but few catch them at that temp.

Walleye and sauger are awesome at 50 because we target them and they are readily catchible.

FYI-

Good eating.
 
Been eating a lot of this one's little cousins(yellow perch) this summer and they are very good, firm flesh, and the whitest meat that you ever saw. Ate a fiddler channel cooked with the perch and it did not compare, flesh not as firm or white. However, for my taste and many of my associates, fried crappie is the ultimate. But, different strokes for different folks!
 
we go to cordell hull in may and do really good trolling crank baits for sauger below the damn cant remember the name of the ramp but close to a old bridge my fatherinlaw caught a 40 lb shovel bill there 3 yrs ago not really good eating but fun to catch
 
eyeseeker, in our part of the world, for those who know where they have caught them from experience(I don't), I understand that Kentucky Lake has a good population, also Pickwick from reports that I have heard for the past few years. I have been catching them in Beech Lake at Lexington. About 5 years ago, they "mysteriously" appeared in the Lake, and now there is a good population. I would doubt that the TWRA stocked them, because they tend to overpopulate smaller bodies of water, so I suspect someone who thought they would like to have them closer to home, brought back some from Kentucky Lake/ Tennessee River. Just my guess.
