Here's a pic of the rack.....don't have one of the buck, but we weighed exactly 75 lbs field dressed. I have seen other deer of similar body and antler size at the same age from this area. I just wonder if he ever would have gotten bigger in body or antlers? I have seen some beautiful bucks from the area.....
No way to know. The deer may have been small due to illness or injury. It is possible that it could have been genetically programed to be a runt (just look at some humans), in which case nothing would have changed much, even with added age. Injury or illness could be temporary or permanent.

Maybe that spike just needed a few more years...lol. Here's a buck from the area I saw the jawbone of today....first molar was cupped out, which I took to mean at least 6.5:

Jawbones have to be pulled from every deer killed on base, which is between 500-1000 a year. I enjoy checking them out just to compare what I think before I see the jawbone. I'm often wrong. The age structure on Base is very high, with a lot of deer killed being over 4.5, not unusual at all to see a 6.5 year old buck.

And guess what the majority of "horn" hunters would say if they saw that in the back of a truck...

Yup. In fact I think a lot of East TN bucks are being incorrectly field-judge as to age. The data clearly shows the harvested buck age structure in East TN isn't that different than the other regions of the state. But all we hear from East TN hunters is how terrible the buck age structure is.
Somewhere there's a disconnect.

I've got to admit that if I seen just those horns in the back of a truck I would be thinking yearling.
