The jag I use for these particular bullets extends just beyond the muzzle when attached to the ramrod (Savage stock one that matches barrel for a flush witness). I have it unscrewed and stored in my stock pouch. Is this necessary?

I wouldn't think so. You could shorten the rod or buy one of the gigarod ramrod sold by the spinjag company.
