To snap off a main beam on a buck like this....

We had photos of this buck during late summer. He disappeared early Oct after we removed the feeder, but based on the summertime pics, I aged him at 3.5 and decided I was going to pass on him this year.

He finally showed back up on 11/17 when he walked right by me at 29 yards for a couple seconds. I gave him a pass. I screwed up.

In the interim before opening of rifle, his right main beam was broken off, and we got great pics of him walking by the original trail cam, then another trail cam on a scrape 100 yards away. He's definetly 4.5. Oh well... hopefully the neighbors pass on him since he's missing an entire side and he'll be even heavier next year.

Pretty amazing how much he filled out from late summer till rut. As BSK would say, 'the rut really made his neck swell' :)

Just wish we could find the buck that snapped him off!!





 
Let's just hope he doesn't grow a long spoke on that side next year. Generally an antler break off will cause pedicle damage.

you wouldn't believe how many bucks we have with jacked up racks due to antlers breaking off at the pedicles. In fact... my last hunt, I saw 3 different 1.5 y/o's with a broken off side.
 


This poor guy got snapped off at the pedicle a couple days after I last saw him from the stand. He probably will have a jacked up rack next year.
 
I feel your pain on the broken antlers. Last year we had one with a hanging antler like the buck you just posted. He grew a third pedicle that sprouted a 2" spike along with another spike from his regular right side and a normal right antler

The second buck is just fine.. the antler dropped off the next day and he comes by that stand quite regularly. Along with 3 other young bucks snapped off. That particular stand was rough on the youngsters this year :)

Of course, we've seen 3 different 4.5 y/o's and 3 different 3.5 y/o's out of that same stand, so there plenty for the youngsters to fear :)
