You began the thread by insisting nobody judge you, yet here you are judging others.

Do you still use a bobber & red worms to catch 3" bluegills off the dock? Or have you progressed on to cat or bass fishing? Do you keep everything or only the eaters, throwing the little ones back? Do you ever try catching a lunker? Or do you only go for the 12 inchers because feeding your family is the only focus? My point is there are stages a deer hunter progresses through. And while one may hunt for the antlers, it doesn't make them singular. You can hunt horns and still enjoy the harvest, and still fill the freezer with delicious venison. What is an ice-cream sundae without a cherry on top?

My first buck was a forkhorn muley. 50" on a good day. And he's hanging on the wall!!
 
I appreciate you asking this question and the respectful responses from others. I would agree with your father, feel the rush and count your blessings. I grew up hunting, fishing, and trapping as essential and expected activities to support my immediate and extended family. After 50 years, I now pass on bucks that makes my father shake his head, put back nearly every fish I catch, and stopped trapping when the hides became worthless. Time with family enjoying the spirit of the woods is priceless!

Although I don't have kids, I can't wait to see someone's first reaction when they kill one for the first time. What they don't know and what I did t realize is when you get your first it's hard to stop lol

I shot a nice 8 and 6 last year but the year before lol shot a 3 point that hung around me all morning then came back and stood around for an hour I couldn't help it I shot him was good eating. Then at the end of gun season I had scope issues and took it off. First day in the woods without it had a dozen does come by me about 100 yards then the last one seen
Rack I shot he just stood there then ran closer well3 perfect behind shoulder shots later I had me a unicorn lol 6" one horn spike. Couldn't tell with open sights. Oh well he tasted good

Eli, you know im going to give you crap every chance I get....and you know im just kidding. As Ive told you via text, do what pleases YOU. If at the end of the day, you are happy/proud of what you killed, that's all that matters. Dont worry about what others do. We are all at different places in this sport/obsession. And as ive heard many times before, never pass up on the first day a deer you would gladly have on the last day. Just have fun.

Yes sir I know, and I'll give you a hard time back. You know it's all fun and games with me and you when it comes to this stuff. I actually love it when y'all give me crap (sometimes) I'm the little brother in the group and that's what I get 😂

This, this THIS!!! Deer hunting used to be FUN! Whatever you killed your buddies would congratulate you, you'd show off your trophy, etc. Now, every deer you shoot you have to worry about it not measuring up to someone else's standards. It wasn't "mature" enough, it would've been a good one next year, and on and on. I've even been guilty of it myself. My club has one rule regarding bucks: If it's a trophy to you, shoot it! Everyone's standards are different. The same guys that make fun of you for shooting a small buck shot truckloads of them back in the day. I guarantee it. Have fun, shoot what you want, and anyone that has a problem with that isn't worth your time.

The below picture is me - hair down to the bottom of my ribcage (and another yearling buck killed with "Thor's Hammers", my double-barreled 58).

Then I got married, had a child, and got old!

Hunted a club in Georgia once after getting an invitation. Camp had 3 corkboards of trailcam pics. One said "shoot," another "cull," and another "wait."
All members were of the "I don't shoot less than 5.5 year-old deer" credo, who reserved their stands before the next day.

One of the least enjoyable hunts I've ever been on.
But I think I can understand that for them it was more about…
1. The camaraderie, food, atmosphere in camp
2. The pride in actually having a certain class of animal on property. That is to say, the success was in the task of managing the land and member harvest to get to that point

…than it was the actual experience of hunting, which just involves waiting in a shooting house overlooking a field. Since I hadn't been part of the management process, it was like watching someone else indirectly farm.
 
lol I know, I counted… it's more of a joke, get it "11" pointer… spike buck? It's a way of telling him it's a good deer however old he is, most of the people around me shoot anything so we call spikes TN 11 pointers

Shoot whatever you want I've been hunting for 30 plus years. And I pass a ton up now but didn't back in the day. And it's a little because I don't really want to shoot young ones and I know the work afterwards.

Hell no! That thing kicks like a cannon! I "joined the crowd" and got a nice 50 inline.

Although, I never really got over the idea of big, heavy MZ bullets (I shot 620 grn Minnie Balls out of Thor's Hammers). I still use big 405 grn 50 caliber bullets.
