The 300 RUM shines past 500 yards. I love mine, but there are many better calibers for closer work (due to cost of ammo, components, etc)

Hunting with the 300 RUM under 300 yards would be like driving a Ferrari on the Natchez trace with the 45mph speed limit.
:)

I bought a remington sps 300 RUM it has a nikon 4.5x14x40 with the bdc, bipod, sling and 100 rounds of nosler balistic
150's all for 400.00 and it only had 43 rounds down the tube
Excellent condition

It's not too much to kill a deer, but IMO it's too much to hunt deer with. I see no sense in burning all that powder and taking a beating when lighter guns are just as effective on deer. And I'm not talking about the occasional shot while hunting; I'm talking about the 100 -200 rounds of ammo you should shoot each year to keep in tune with your rifle.

Anything in the .308 Winchester-based cases are plenty.

Now, having said all that, a few months ago I helped a buddy load up some elk loads for his 300 RUM. I was very impressed. I'd love to have one in my safe for the occasional hoot at the range!

Holy crap! The scope, accessories, and ammo are worth $400!

I'd be interested how those 150 gr Ballistic Tips will hold up at 300 RUM velocities, though. My son shoots 150 gr Ballistic Tips in his 308, and has some penetrtation problems at close range. My buddy shoots 200 gr Accubonds in his 300 RUM and still gets a lot more speed than the 150 gr 308 WIN.

i have shot several deer with 150 gr hornady sst
(similar to nosler bt)out of a 300 rum 3750 fps
at less than 100yds broadside in the heart lungs
and it was a death ray ,but i had a 180 swift scirocco in the top of the magazine to switch out if it was any other shot
than straight broadside

I bet that 150 grain SST will put a mean hole through the ribs.

I was shooting the 150 grain sst, I blieve, and they were very impressive. Never had a deer run more than 6 or 7 yards. I count the flip as running. :)
But went to a 185 grain this year and very impresed with the performance of it also. Cutting holes at 100 yards

30 cal entrance everything inside chest cavity jelly and usually
a 4 inch hole on the inside of opposite side rib cage with no exit
all the deer where DRT
