My dad and I got into a arguement today. I've got trail cameras over my plot and havent got a pic of a single deer in 3 weeks. But when I set over looking it I can see deer in the woods. So today I snuck into the woods and built a natural ground blind and placed a camera on a well used trail. My old man heard something on tv about someone saying to stay out of the woods. So to him this has to be the gospel for all hunters. Me? I've hunted these woods before with my daughter and still was able to harvest quailty bucks out of my stand a week later. What yall think?
 
I think that if you use good scent control that you can get away with a lot of stuff. But you had to remember that the woods are home to a deer just like your house is home to you. If something is out of place in your house, you'll know it. And a deer is the same way in the woods. I usually like to wait a week or two after setting a new stand or blind, before I hunt from it. It just gives all the creatures time to get used to it.
 
i hunt nothing but woods,like cf said scent control, wind direction are key.i put up blinds and leave them to rot.usually get three-five years before i have to replace them due to rips.but when putting out new ones in new location i will put out atleast a month or two.natural blinds are great to if you do not go overboard.there are natural blown downs in the woods try to make it as natural as possible.sounds like if you do not try to hunt the woods you going home empty handed,you make the call but i would be in the woods and chances are eating backstrap tonight
 
I don't get it. Food plots are a pretty recent phenomenon, and hunters used to hunt in the woods all of the time before they forgot their woodsmanship and began sitting on the edge of green fields exclusively. I have access to a small powerline that could be used to make into a food plot on a property that I hunt, but I choose not to. It is a great place to see and shoot deer, but I don't hunt it very often because it is not very interesting to me. I see much more action (deer, squirrels,turkeys, chipmunks, birds, bobcats, etc.) in the woods, which is far more enjoyable to me.

Get in the woods and hunt, and enjoy yourself!

Fields are a great starting point, I like to walk the edges to find the most heavily traveled route. I then walk that backwards until I find a hunt-able area around 75-100 yards from the field. I find that most of the Big Bucks will not enter the fields until long after dark but they like to hang out in the edges of the woods until then. I have seen more big deer just inside the woods then I have seen in the fields during day light. As far as Blinds make them look natural as possible as stated above, Tree stands I don't mind hunting right away.
