This is not a contageous disease. It is simply a bacterial infection bucks get from rubbing and fighting. Stress fractures in the cranium can allow the infection a pathway to the brain, which can be fatal. This is nothing more than you getting an infection in a cut on your hand--same type of deal.

But it is a major cause of buck mortality.

BSK diagnosed this one's death for me. I found it dead in early February

And I strongly suspect that buck's infection was ongoing while his antlers were growing, hence the non-typical antler.

I don't see why it wouldn't be, the crack in the skull looked somewhat healed over and the antler was noticeably affected.
