My hunting buddy shot this buck this morning. What do you think would have caused it? No swelling all bone growth and the leg will not bend at all.

Looks like an old break!

Agreed. I've seen two bucks with that exact same type of swelling. When I cut into them, in both, I found a 22 bullet still stuck in the healed-over broken leg bones.

I shot a buck like that one time. He had gotten his leg hung in a fence when he was 1.5. I shot the deer on a buddies place and he had keep up with him his whole life.

One of the first bucks I ever shot (back in the early 1980's) had a back leg like that. I think he was probably hit by a car much earlier. I cut into the knot, which was a mass of connective tissue, and the leg bone was broken with the bone ends healed back together but displaced.

An injury like that and none of the non-typical stuff you see on other deer. Makes it very interesting to try and find out what happened. Maybe a friendly hunting Doc could x-ray it? Or maybe a Vet?

I'd guess its a healed bullet wound...Be happy to radiograph any such mysteries for members...I'm in Harriman...

That would be cool I'd bring it to you if you were a little closer. Thanks for the offer.
