Info on a .22 MAG vs a .17 HMR

I'm a .22 mag nut I love my Ruger model 96 my son is looking at a .17 hmr,help me out here. Why should he buy a rifle in .17 when he has access to my .22 mag anytime he wants,other than just picking up a new rifle ? Is there enough differance between the two ? He wants it for vermen the 4 legged kind. :D
 
accuracy is the selling point for the round,the 22 mag hits harder but is not as accurate due to bullet construction.thats not to say the 22 mags cant be really good,i have a marlin 882ssv that use to put 3 in 1/2" on a good day at 100yards.my nef .17hmr can do that every shot if your having a decent day.i cant seem to hold em in there like i use to but dont spend time at the range every week either.i like having both,i would pick a 22mag over it if i was after yotes,17hmr if fox's or smaller,it also whacks crows really good too,mike243
 
I have had a 17hmr and sold it because it was only good for shooting paper in my opinion. Too big for squirrels and I don't have enough fox around here to justify having one. The 22mag is good for fox, bobcat, and coyote if you stay under 100 yards. And they are good to have in case you want to hunt a WMA. I am considering a 22mag for that very reason.

The 17HMR is on the far edge of not being enough to completely anchor a coyote. If you could guarantee every shot would not hit bone, you might be alright. I don't like those odds when calling predators. That is why I went with the 204. This little gal went almost 75 yards after I shot her. If I hadn't almost stepped on her when getting into the hardwoods I would not have found her. Hardly no blood trail at all. She blended in very well. Under 100 yards a shooter that knows where to put the bullet every time and wait for the right shot might have some good luck. But with coyotes most of the time you don't have time to make those decisions. I want a caliber I can go thru shoulder when I need to.
 
I bought the Savage model 93 in 17HMR for hunting yotes on WMA's where centerfires aren't allowed. Looking back I probably should have bought the 22 mag but it is deadly accurate. I had some squirrels getting into the rafters through a vent and I eradicated a few of them with it. The 17-grain Hornady V-max bullets will put a hole and a half through a squirrel.
 
I have a savage 17,, cool dude,, faster and flatter,, However i am reluctant to take it for yotes as i try a lil more this year,, I am sure it will kill but at only 162 ftlbs at 100yds with a 20 gr ,,, might just buy a centerfire,,, wouldnt give it up though..

Yup. For hunting yes. For paper punching, which is what I did with it, it was great. I only took this little gun hunting once just to see and I saw. I sold it about 2 weeks later. All of my scopes for hunting are 3-9 or smaller.
 
them little bullets sure are hard to see on paper at 100y,i have a 6-18 on my 1022T,thought about switching it to the 17hmr but would need way taller rings,i dont shoot much paper anymore so i reckon the hunting scopes going to stay on it,mike243
