Indoor Grillin?

I know there are electic grills (G Foreman) but any of you tried one of the "plates" that you put on your stove? Do they work on electric range tops? I notice on TV it gives great lookin grill marks but does it have a grilled taste? Also it appears to smoke, so what keeps it from setting off the smoke detector?

If it does truly grill with good flavor...any recommendation on brand?

they work ok but its not like outdoor grilling,it marks the meat up nicely ,it also makes a mess & yes it can set the fire alarm off.it is a pain in the arse to clean a cast iron 1,i think a teflon might be easier to clean but the coating wont last long,i been known to surround it with paper towels to catch the grease,mike243

It would be the same as cooking it in a skillet except for the marks from the ridges and some of the fat will get away from the meat.

I don't know about electric stoves. Some grill pans have flat bottoms but apparently those don't work as well (because the ridges are then that much thicker). I would say if it is not a flat-top electric stove, then sure. Flat-top stoves are out of my range of experience (no pun intended).

Tried the electric grill before and they don't make the meat taste grilled. Best solution is a heavy coat and brave the elements.
