Started the calling season off this morn with a bang, actually 4 bangs. hit the north side of the county this morn. called 9, shot 4, found 3. Set one- 34 pound female, came hard to the Tony Teppe open reed- probably 4 minutes in to the sequence. 65 yards was close enough for the cz. anchored dead after a short run.
set 2- saw a pair of yotes close to the farm we were call next. looped around and setup. using the v2 verminator open reed, first pair showed fast. tried to cross the fence (new woven) while they were trying to come through 3rd dog came from the other area. they went to the right, we were sure they would find an opening. never did and never showed again. they might have picked up our downwind.
set 3- bumped a female yote going in. set up to try o call her back in. blue 5 did a great job keeping the tebbe volume low. got caught off guard when a different pair came from a different wood lot. they saw me trying to turn and stoppe44d. manage to get a bullet into the lead male and he he tail spun and fell, then found his feet and was gone. must have got shoulder blade- always amazes me how tough these prairie poodles are.
set 4- headed to our nest spot, we see a lone male standing 300 yards out on a path through a cattle pasture. we get blue 5 in shooting possession and i get on the v2, he slowly closes to 125 yards and blue anchors him with a rem 223. he never twitches.
set 5- we finally get to our stand spot and look out across a huge pasture and see a lone dog, crossing the top of the field- 600 yards off. he stood out like a sore thumb in the bright sun. we watch chase mice for a bit. blue gets on the call and he comes in like a puppy on a string. closes to 210 yards and turns broadside, he would have came closer but the wind was less than perfect so the cz took care of the wet work. he never took a step.
