Thanks TiminTN, I got 550 555 and 565, this is for an old 280 P.O. Ackley I have been shooting for over 30 years and hate to change anything as good as it shoots IMR 4831.But may have to.

I've had 3 280 AI, and #1 powder was N165. 63.5 gr with 140 gr Nosler Accubond jumping .012". That powder has shot small in every 280 Ackley I know of. I gave the load to Jim Borden, he tried it and said that load was really good and would offer it to anyone he built a 280 AI for. I agree the IMR 4831 is really good. I used to call that my #1 till I tried N165. Same grouping but the slower 165 gave infinite brass life. No stretching to speak of.

I'm going to build 1 more 280 Ackley before I die.
RL19 was super accurate and fast, BUT inconsistent by comparison to IMR 4831 and N165.

I dont know how far you are from Memphis, but if reluctant to change I'm sure I have enough IMR4831 to sell a pound or 2. I been checking into antelope permits for this fall and the source I used told me they have not sold any in a few years.

I built a 280 AI for a member here, he tried N165, I was told the rifle was "to accurate" ....lol. Thats gratitude for ya.
I will try the N165 I can get it tomorrow, I have a 300 yard range behind my shop here, been wanting to try it being it has a close burning rate to IMR 4831. When we built this old 280 IMR 4831 just seemed magical. I also shoot a 140 gr and like it across these long bean fields. Thanks for the info.
I have one too. I shoot 57 grains of IMR4831 with 140 gr. ballistic tips. You?
What primer Tim? I have about any kind just wondering what you were using.

Fed 210. What brass are you using? I found 280, to be same length as 270. The only Winchester 280 is nickle plated, so I used 270 Win headstamp and necked it to 30 with mandrel. And then used 280 AI FL die and sized the neck little by little to give a slight crush fit in the chamber. My barrel length was 24 3/4" and got very consistent 3206, fps velocity.

Fire form 280 brass with 15 grains of pistol powder with cream of wheat filling the case plugged with a pinch of toilet paper. Dave Tooley built my rifle and that was his recommendation to fire form. Works like a charm. Good luck.
I used 270 Norma brass run mine thru a 280 neck die and shot it to get the Ackley. It shot fantastic with the Norma brass just fire forming. I hunted with the brass I was fire forming shot great. Mine has a 26" Shilen Select Match Barrel 3178, FPS with the Ackley load. I have kept my brass in good shape annealing and clean. The old gun has served me well for over 30 years shooting across these bean fields here on the farm. But like you I would like to have another before I die, be 70 in a few months better hurry. LOL
