Spent the last week in Cudjoe Key, Florida with my wife, son, mom, dad, brother and SIL. My brother booked a tarpon trip for my dad, him and myself. I've fought some big fish before, but I was blown away how strong a 90 pound tarpon can pull. My arms were completely shot after fighting just one. I had the fish almost to the boat when a BIG hammerhead wanted the tarpon more than I did. We also caught a ton of snapper, jacks and bunch of other kinds of fish through the week fishing off of bridges and out of kayaks. I love Tennessee, but I could move down there tomorrow.
 
pound for pound, the strongest fish i have ever hooked was a jack crevalle. if tied tail to tail, a 25 lb jack would drag a 90 lb tarpon.
there is no way i could ever live in fla. but you are right, those fish will ruin the fishing around here for you. after our first trip to gulf shores, i didn't even want to fish around here any more.
 
I grew up in Miami. Wait till you hook a 60 pound amberjack. Or maybe a 250 pound shark. A 20 pound king is another thrill.
 
I love salt water fishing. I've never hooked a tarpon. I bet seeing that hammerhead feast of that tarpon was awesome.

Did you get a chance to hook in to a Permit while you were down there?

Didn't get the chance to hook a permit. Seeing the hammerhead eat that tarpon was unbelievable. I would hate to fall into the water under the Bahia Honda Bridge!!

I used to free dive for lobster on the gulf side between a lot of the Keys. See a lot of BIG 'cuda but never a shark although I know they are there.

We fished quite a bit from the bridge going over to No Name Key and there were several 40lb+ barracuda cruising around. I caught a lobster one night on a piece of yellow jack. I somehow hooked it between the joint on one of it's legs. Too bad the season wasn't open for them. It looked tasty.
