Identify this Seed

Lately, I've been seeing these seeds in coyote poop. I'm trying to figure out what they're eating. Any ideas? Thanks.

Really???
I've only seen one little batch of 4 persimmon trees on the 1850 acres. But that doesn't mean they don't go out of their way to get it. There could be others I don't know about too.

And I thought persimmons ripened in fall?

Interestingly, last night, I was just writing an article that mentions how much coyotes love persimmons.

I think so,could be wrong. Persimmon can be hard to find unless you just notice the fruit. When you get to where you can recognize by bark(you may be able to already I dunno) you will find ALOT more. There was so much fruit on soft mast trees this year and it hung in the trees so long that Im still finding shriveled up persimmons on the ground.

I agree with Steven. I had persimmons hanging on very late in the year. I have been finding the same scat, Gil.

I am in the same shoes gil1. We dont have 1 persimmon on our place, but just about everytime I see coyote poop, I see those seeds in it. The only persimmons that I know of are across the street from our place and there are 3 or 4 of them. I am pretty sure thats whats in the poop. I guess it just goes to show how much they like them fruits and how far they will go to get them.

Coyotes and other animals like foxes travel like deer. Sometimes we think that they stay exclusively on our property but they move all over for food. Your neighbor may have tons of persimmons.

Because of the scat that I have found I have looked more for persimmon trees. I have found several since then. So I guess these rascals have helped me become more aware of what I have in the woods.

Looks just like the persimmon yote poop we found all over Birdsong this year.If you have any overgrown thickets the persimmons might be growing in there.
You figure the yotes are planting them everywhere they poop . They can pop up anywhere .

WesttnHuntinman, you bring a very good point that I would like to expound on some more. Around here all you have to do is find areas that were once fields 50 and 100 years ago but have since been abandoned and you WILL find groves of persimmons nearly every time. Reason being, the old timers grew these persimmons so that they could turn their hogs on them in the Fall to fatten them up prior to slaughter. Just an interesting tidbit I thought would fit in here.

Yes, coyotes do eat persimmons but so do possums.
They could also get them by killing and eating the possums and in turn getting the seeds from them.
Just another thought, for whatever it's worth.

True Steven . Seems like if you find a fruit tree in general you'll find a old home place close by. If I find a old apple or pear tree bearing fruit in the woods. I'm usally looking for the old home place. Seems like deer always like these little pockets also.

Ruger, I have personally watched a opossum eating persimmons, and he was actually spitting the seeds out as he ate them! Now you know the rest of the story! lol

We see that alot on our lease,so far I've only located 2 persimmon trees. We have 2200 acres though so there could be many more that we haven't found yet.

Just for the heck of it, I grabbed some seeds out of the yote poop yesterday. If I were to plant them in my back yard with some TLC, could I expect them to germinate - or is it more complicated than that? Maybe get them started in a milk carton in the window?

Just thought it would be fun to tell the grandkids one day that them there persimmons trees came out of a critter butt! :D

It is possible but the chances of getting good germination are pretty low.

Might be better odds than you think. I get several little seedlings that come up in the yard from the persimmons that just drop and lay every year.
