Just acquired this over the holidays. Don't have much info on it only that it's from my wives great great grandfather which would be mid to late 1800's when he was alive. Don't know where how or when he got it. I've looked all over it to see any markings, words,numbers, etc and can't find anything. It does look to be in the 30 caliber range with an octagon barrel.

If there are no marking on the barrel, I would suggest a kit of some sort.....I know that smaller calibers were usually used for small game. Just a thought.....But I'm not a gunsmith.

I would remove the barrel to see if any info is stamped on it underneath. Same for the lock and butt plate.

Nice old family heirloom you have there. More photos would be very helpful in its possible ID. Also, where her great-great grandfather lived could also help quite a bit. My first thought, with the limited views, I was thinking maybe a mid western gun but on second thought it has several features that now make me lean toward a southern origin. Photos of the lock area(both sides), breech and tang, sights, ram rod thimbles, better shot of the cap box, muzzle face would be very nice. A couple of other things, please don't try to do anything to improve by polishing or refinishing and make sure you treat it as if were loaded.
