Flipping thru channels a couple days ago I ran across a couple doing a Elk hunt out west. Gal is up first and has a mature 5x6 bull at 320 yards across a valley. Put a shot right behind the shoulder for a double lung hit and guide says hit him again. No need to as Elk started to stumble and go down. Before she could even rack in another round it was down for the count. What amaze me was she was shooting a 25-06 with a 110 grain bullet. Even at that range it still had enough going for it to take down a large animal such as that Elk. I know the 25-06 will jerk the rug out from under a normal size whitetail but never gave it thought on bigger game animals. 25 caliber is just not that big a hunk of lead to send downrange on a Elk IMO. I guess the old saying Speed Kill's holds true in this case.

I have seen a 25/06 in action but I would not carry one into the Elk woods. Wind is a problem. Still, a lot of people kill elk with a 243.

If we were inside the guide's mind, the reason he said hit it again was because with a 1/4 round you better be really good or very lucky a that range. And elk hide is thick.

I hit a 5x5 bull at around 125 yards with a 180 Nosler from a 300 Winmag. He swapped ends and headed back up hill like nothing happened. When I came up to him you could see Wyoming through the hole. They can be very tough animals.

Any gun can do the job up close. But if you ever been to Wyoming you know the wind is a major factor. I have killed them from 70 yards out 695. You need something that's going buck that wind, and have power to bust them front shoulders down.

Put a high quality bullet in the boiler room its gonna do the job. Put a cannon through the gut and you're gonna have an awful, awful time and probably not recover that animal. I'll take a light caliber like .308 or 7mm-08 I can shoot comfortably and accurately over a cannon like a .300WM or .338 any day of the week.
