More than likely the same rifle you deer hunt with. I would say a 270 on up would work well with a good bullet. I would not hesitate to use my 264 Win Mag or 270 WSM on an elk hunt.

Elk aren't that hard to kill, just hard to drag. :grin:

A Good penetrating bullet with expansion helps.

I like the 270 WSM as a step up from deer caliber to Bigger & Tougher skinned game such as Elk.
I load it with 150 gr partitions for close up shots, and use the 130 gr Interbond & Barnes for long range shots. The Barnes will do both well probably.

For Heavy timber, really nasty weather, and true stalking I like my stainless XLR lever 444 also.
 
What guns do you have now?? No need for a magnum, I bet the rounds you hunt with now will work just fine with the right bullet. When the 30-30 winchester first came out many western hunters thought it was way too much gun for elk. Elk haven't gotten any tougher.
 
I would borrow my brothers Marlin 45-70 Guide Gun,,he has it loaded almost like a 458 win mag,,unless I could see 500 yards,,then I would carry my 300 RUM with 200 Partitions
 
The 243 is not my first choice, but it will do the job. 100 grain Nosler partition within 100 yds.

If I got drawn I would get me a rifle specifically for that chance of a lifetime hunt. One comes to mind right now. A Winchester M70 Featherweight 300 WSM topped with a Zeiss Conquest 2.5-8 with Barnes 168 grain Tipped TSX.
 
If I drew an elk tag, I'd work up a load for my 270. I'd probably start with a 140 or 150 gr Partition.

If money was tight (and it usually is) I'd use whatever rifle I liked for deer in that area, unless it was on the lower-end of the deer rifle spectrum. In other words, I wouldn't use anything under .25 caliber (25-06 would do with the right bullet)and certainly not the 30-30, but anything from the 6.5 sweede on up. No qualms with a 260 or 7-08 with the right bullets.
 
Of the guns I own I would have to take my 350 Rem. Mag. Its a Model 673 and balances perfect for me. It shoots well too. As for bullet choice, it would come from whatever is on hand, so 225GK or 225 Swift A-Frame. Factory Core-Lok will work also.

Oh Man! Elk at 100 yards the 7mm-08 would be sweet. Lightweight rifle in the Model 7 / Win 70 Featherweight class, 2-7X33 Leupold scope, and a .284 dia 160 gr Accubond or 175 gr Partition.

Roger that, but I would use the sweetest of them all. Kimber 84m grade a fancy european walnut. Match chamber, trigger and barrel. 5lbs 12 0z topped with a 10 0z 2.5-8x36 leupold vx3 in extra low leupold rings with a lightweight oiled thin leather sling by tanyard springs. It is the favorite deer rifle I own.
