I have a crapload of Federal Truball slugs that I shoot out of my 870 20 ga slug gun with a smoothbore rifle sight barrel. They shoot great, I can group them about as good as when I shoot an iron sighted rifle with my old eyes.

But, I just caught a cantilever rifled barrel on sale and bought it and put a Swift 1.5 x 4.5 scope on it. I was needing a scope with my eyes making the iron sights fuzzy, and with the standard slug instead of a sabot it would make my thicket gun even better. I was wanting to shoot those truball slugs in that barrel and I was thinking I could put cast bullet lube on top of the slug there around where the roll crimp is to cut down on leading then have at it. I figure it will spin the slug and stablize it and make it more accurate. I know I can shoot sabots but $3.00 a POW just ain't right. Will that work? I kinda figure if a old school 1 in 28 twist muzzleloader would stablize a soft lead maxie ball type bullet then the 1 in 34 shotgun barrel would do the same for the truball? Will the cast lube cut down or stop leading? I guess after sighting it in, I would only shoot it a few times a season , it's not like I'll shoot praire dogs with it and shoot it 100 times a day. Think it will work?

One other thing, the old school muzzleloaders didnt have the problem of the bullet sliding over the rifling,it grabbed and spun the bullet. The Truball is listed a 1600 fps muzzle, what velocities did those old muzzle loaders shoot conicals? Wasn't it about the same?

i don't know about the ballistics but i do know on those cantilevered barrels consistent accuracy can be a problem.
i solved my problem by making a spacer to go between the end of the cantilever and the receiver
anyway i think brownell's offers spacers just for this now

405 gn lead hp power belt and 80 grains 777 in a 24" bbl is 1350 ish fps

i dont know if that will help u

its going to lead the barrel no matter what you put on it. bite the bullet and spend the $ to find out which sabot shoots the best. my buddys shoots great with a rifled barrel with sabots . you might not like spending the $ but you will love the results when you get it dialed in. I missed a buck Sunday at 150y with a normal slug. never again will I be under gunned at a distance if I can help it
