Over the last 6 months that i have wasted alot of money on scopes that have alot of power when a 3x9x40 or a 4x12x40 would work so much better :crazy:

All of my hunting scopes are 3-9, most of the time when I pulle the trigger they are on 3

I have 2 1.5-6 sightrons and a 1.5-8 minox. I have killed deer with all of them and they have always been set on 1.5 when I pulled the trigger, but my shots are rarely very far. I killed 2 deer this year, one at 60 yds and the other at 20 yds. I do have a 3-12x42 Big Sky on my 300wm but thats in the hopes of hunting out west some day.

I figured that out a long time ago. Most of my rifles have variables with the max power 9 or less. I hunt with:

1.5-5
1.75-6
2.5-8
2-7
3-9
3-12
3-15

I really like the 2.5-8 for E TN

most of mine are 2-7 or 3-9
i do have an 8-32x that has come in quite handy when shooting skunks at long range which by the way is the only way to kill a skunk :sick:

400 or less, you just don't need it.

Spend the extra money on trigger time, learn your rifle, your load, your dope and you are golden.

Exactly.

AND, IMO, most hunters would fare better if they were carrying more 2-7x's instead of 3-9's regarding most of TN's deer hunting.

Some of the newer scope offerings are providing a much wider range of magnification options where we can kinda have the cake and eat it, too, such as a 2-12x option. But like you said, quality glass is usually more important than higher magnification.

I'll be going the 2x12x42 VX-6 direction ASAP. I'll let you know how it looks Wes. Reading reviews, it compares nicely to the Swaro and S&B.

And saving 1/2 off the Swaro Z6 and S&B will be okay...

Funny you should bring up those two powers, just 2 weeks ago I bought 2 scopes in both those powers from a sale they had at Cabela's.

I have been telling ya`ll for years that a scope with an AO does not belong on a deer rifle,,I have owned 36,24 and 20 power fixed scopes,8.5-25 6-24 and 6.5-20,,they all have their uses in the target world but are almost useless to a hunter..

Seeing that Leupold VX-6 is exactly what caused me to not buy a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10 x 44mm that was on sale. Have bought neither yet, but believe this 2x12 VX-6 is going to be my next scope on a deer rifle. And it's Made in America. But, Geez, Leupold is sure proud of that scope, even if it is much less costly than a Swaro!

Other than cost, not sure what the downsides may be (lots of rotation to go from 2x to 12x), but this single scope has the benefits of three longtime popular configurations (2-7x, 3-9x, 4-12x) all rolled up into a single scope.
