Savage. I love my ML-II, and would love to have a centerfire rifle in .308Win or .338WM to match it. Some complain about it, but I love the accutrigger. I have a Rem700 .270Win that is around 20ish years old that I love, but the new Remingtons, Marlins, and other Freedom Group guns are hit or miss on QC, and way short on pride in craftsmanship.

I hate to say it, but another "bargain gun" to look at that is ugly but getting rave reviews due to engineering is the Ruger American Rifle.

I sighted in a buddy's new 700 yesterday with Nikon glass, the very best it will do is 1.5 @ 100. My Savage will clover leaf all day long. I don't think Remington is what it used to be. I'd pick the Savage hands down...

Of course, you don't mention which savage stainless you are looking at so its hard to say whether the savage you are looking at is better than the remington or not. The axis is a savage but I would not say its better than the remington.

If you want a good remington get a 5R or a Sendero. Honestly I'd take either of those over a savage.

I agree the axis is junk. I already have a model 10 in 22-250, the model 16 is my next beast. The model 14 is next on my list

I would go with Remington but I have a good buddy who would go with Savage.

The SPS Remington is very very very very cheap grade. I would stay far away from them if I were you. Trust me; I know. If you go with Remington, you'd better stick with the upper end rifles they make.

Otherwise, today I would pick a Marlin over a Remington...and an upper end Savage over them.

Best sub $400 gun I've ever shot though is a Marlin X7. Have shot one in 30.06, .243, and .308. All three of them were shooting under half inch groups at 100 with cheap optics and factory loads. I put a better scope on the .308 one and hand loads, and got it down to .250 groups at 100. This is with a non free floated barrel...straight out of the box.

I have a NIB Remington 700 XCR on the rack in 25/06, they shoot lights out. It would make for a fine rifle. Between lower end Remmy and Savage 16 in SS I too would pick the Savage. I have sold many Predators and all with superb accuracy, the kind of talk I used to hear about Remingtons of older vintage.

Savage Arms has come further than any other firearms company making what shooters want.

Seems like a lot of guns out there now days, but I tend to mostly trust the used guns more, unless you are spending real money.
