To clarify, I thought you meant by the receiving team. I assume you meant the kicking team. And no, they cannot advance it.
Yes kicking team.
Seems, if you can return a fumble, that this would be treated similarly.
It worked in our favor today but I agree that it should be legal. Be interesting to know why it can't.

I'm pretty sure muffed punts can't be advanced either.
I think you're right.
Miffed punts can't be also but no clue as to why they can't return them along with onside kicks.
