I Don't Understand...

how some hunters can estimate Boone and Crockett score of deer on the hoof down to the very inch. For instance, I read some of the posts on this forum that say "I saw a deer that scored 128 or 133 or 156, etc." The best I can do is to say, "I THINK that deer scored 110 to 115" or "I think he scored 130 to 135". Am I missing something, or is an estimate within 5 inches the more realistic way to approach this?

We're just that good B&B. :) seriously even when a picture is posted the opinions can vary greatly. I've seen some people who can estimate within a few inches when the buck is on the ground or they are holding the rack but field judging can be very difficult within +/- a couple inches. I guess we can say whatever we believe and dare anyone to dispute it. Ranges WOULD be more realistic.

I score every buck for a taxidermist for the last 8 years( most bucks go from 135-175) and that is how I got really good at scoring instantly on the hoof.

for most people its a guess and most people are usually 10-30 inches higher then it really is. it is just fun to guess is why I do it and I am decent at it some deer just really stump me. usually I do the 5 inch intervals to.

I've noticed most folks over estimate by quite a bit, I actually normally under shoot them

The best I can do is to say, "I THINK that deer scored 110 to 115" or "I think he scored 130 to 135".

That's the best I can do as well--within 5 inches. And I'm not always right on that either!
