If what I was told today is the dumbest thing I have ever heard or the smartest. You guys may have heard or thought about doing this but not me. So I was talking deer hunting with a guy today that told me his father keeps an old dirty sweaty shirt in his stand or near his stand year around changing it out every so often to keep the smell strong. This is to let the deer gradually get used to his scent until they don't pay any attention to it. He swears by it.
 
I heard of a guy who put out his empty laundry detergent jugs around his stand... That way he could hunt smelling Gain fresh.
 
Beats me but my dear has gotten use to my smell but it has taken 30 years lol
 
I've hear of people putting old clothes stuffed like a scarecrow in their stands so the deer get used to the silhouette but not of getting them used to the human scent.

Why would you want to be hunting one stand over and over? The deer learned to avoid that stand the first time they smelled the sweaty shirt.
 
Deer can be conditioned but it would take alot of sweaty shirts to get them conditioned to my entire hunting property. I'm sure once you try to kill one though the effect would decrease. Many places in Texas they just turn on a feeder from the back of a truck and the deer come running like dogs. Not really hunting at that point.
 
Did this guy say how many deer he'd killed from that stand? I'd be more apt to put that out in the areas I wanted the deer to avoid.

I know you have probably forgot more about deer than I'll ever know but I don't agree with this statement,Maybe mature bucks, but if that was the case you could put up a sweatshirt and keep deer out of your garden,

Kind of what I was thinking. I moved to the country about six month's ago to a cabin in the woods loaded with deer. Every time I stepped out the back door the deer would scatter. Now I can walk out the back door with deer fourtyards away sit down and drink coffee watching them with nothing more than a glance from them every now and then. They have learned there is no harm here. I know they see me, I know they smell me, I know their attitude towards me has changed. Not that I would try that where I hunt but what I am seeing in my back yard leans toward the deer getting conditioned.
 
I have heard of people putting emptying their ash trays in a coffee can and leaving them at the bottom of their stands to get the deer used to the smell of cigarettes so they can smoke in the stand
 
IDK if that will work, but have heard stories of farmers working (they smell like people) and big bucks just walking out in front of them at like 30 yds. maybe they do get used to it.
 
I've heard of folks putting something out to maybe push deer there way. But putting scented clothing out for the deer to adjust to sounds ridiculous. Any mature deer would avoid the area.
 
Old trick that has been around for ages. May work, don't see why it wouldn't. I did know a guy who fed deer in front of his stands up until a couple weeks before the season. He always hung a rag soaked in Aqua Velva. Deer got use to it...I guess. Then he always put a bunch on when he went hunting.

I do know, putting a sweaty shirt in the stand for bear hunting has some merit. However, 90% of the time, they end up eating the shirt. That is a fact.

I know a man that had a place on top of the mountain. He had a 3 legged doe he could feed from his hand while at his cabin.

The place he put corn out..... he could see the same deer and she would blow at him and wouldn't get anywhere near him.

They can be conditioned.
