Got a late lease and looking for some extra scouting tools. Downloaded the free version of Huntstand and it's actually better than I anticipated.

What I don't get is the Huntzone feature. I understand it's designed to help predict wind direction but what doesn't register is the red and green zones. It says the red zone is where you're scent will be carried and yellow if it drifts. But unless I'm mistaken that's the most upwind spot and where you'd want to be.

I'm prone to overthinking things some times so I figured I see if someone has had experience with it.

Red is downwind and the direction the wind is blowing to which is opposite of the direction that the wind is blowing from. If you have a North wind, the red will be pointing to the South where your scent will be going.

Got that which makes the red area upwind and where you'd want to be. So am I just confused by the color choice?

I haven't used HuntStand in years. But red is downwind. Northeast wind would mean the red faces southwest. I only use predicted winds as a guideline for what the actual wind might be. I use weather channel app to see the forecasted wind by the hour and then go from there.

It makes sense if you look at it from the standpoint that it shows from the stand, or placed marker, so anything coming from your red side you may get busted, so if a good spot is in that direction, you can move to get it upwind from you. In my spot today, if I was in the open, I would not expect much coming from my right side (front is toward the plots), as that is the danger zone (red) but I just keep the windows closed.

That makes sense. It's not designed to determine blind/stand placement but for what's predicted from your blind/stand already in place.

It has a "place huntzone marker" feature where you can click anywhere and will tell you your danger zone from that spot, to see if the predicted winds will favor that spot. Here I clicked where I park my travel trailer. And you can see the mouse cursor (green circle) between the two zones at the bottom, if I were to click there it would move my temporary zone (left one) to that spot.

I been using it for years. And it is accurate most of the time. Only thing to watch for that throws it off some are cold fronts. And it doesn't factor in hollers and hills and stuff. Wind does weird things around those. You want to be facing into the red. It's Farley simple to figure out once you use the app for a while.

I like to be facing away from the red and into the wind

If you are looking for a spot, the red let's you know where the best chance for the deer to smell you, so avoid being at the tip of the cone when good trails are in the red zone. But if you already have a stand up, or are in it, it isn't a bad idea to keep an eye on the red zone, to try and see/hear a deer before he can smell you.

I use it all the time. Make sure you click the link to keep your weather updated. The app will also ask you if you want to update the weather information.

I found it to be most effective if there is a relatively strong wind direction. The areas I hunt in Middle Tennessee the wind changes constantly. When this happens just be aware of it and keep your head on a swivel. Many times deer come from anywhere/everywhere, even in areas that have funnels and pinch points. Keep looking around you, even down wind. I have had many deer come in straight down wind and not bust me.

I never use the Huntzone/weather feature, but the mapping stuff is pretty nice.

Pro tip - the desktop version (log in from your computer, not on your phone) has some extra features that aren't in the app. The most notable one is probably the parcel owner look-up feature, but the ability to draw/mark/label features on the map is way, way easier on the desktop as well. I'll use it to draw spots to check on the aerial photo, then when I'm out scouting/hunting I can walk right up to those areas and check them out in person.

I don't pay any attention to the wind, of course I haven't ever killed a deer.
