Just curious what different folks approach is to hunting in moderate to heavy wind. Talking 10+mph stuff. I usually still get out in it and try to head for the thickets. Makes life in a treestand interesting :)

usually avoid it

did kill a couple at the very end of a moderately gusty day, after wind died down, but I can't say I remember seeing much of any deer when it's really windy.

I'm interested to hear what people say because I don't know much about hunting in the wind since I tend to stay out of it.
 
I still hunt into the wind or across the wind depending on the terrain and cover. Had a doe about run over me this morning doing that. Unfortunately she saw my raise the gun and I missed her clean as she bolted down a near vertical slope.
 
If you can find a good spot it can be as productive as any other spot.. I try to stay close to very large thickets or mature pine stands... Hunted a big pine stand this morning after the rain let up and saw several does of course they came in and bedded down.. Any place the deer can get out of the wind. I know everybody preaches about staying out of big draws and bottoms due to swirling winds but I've found those places productive during high winds..
 
Diehard Hunter reminded me I should be still hunting the field thicket where I saw that buck. It would still be tough with a bow and I would have to get real close to a deer to take a bow shot in the wind. If anything it would show me a bit more about where these deer bed and move, and I could use any bit of knowledge on this thicket that I can get.

LOL - good point! I tend to stay home on the very windy days, but hate to miss a chance to get into the woods. I know that folks love to stalk onthese days. I am very patient sitting still, but when I start moving I start slow and then ADD kicks in and I start walking. Doesn't usually work out well.

Thickets and heavy cover seem to be what folks try. Very interesting and thank you for the response. Always trying to learn.
 
i've noticed on gusty afternoons sitting on the edge of a field i won't see a deer until right before dark when/if the wind dies down. Otherwise like someone else said, hunting mature pines or thick areas that break the wind can be productive. i'm sure the pine trees break the wind, but i'm sure they are also a lot quieter than being in hardwoods and allow the deer to hear better.
 
I also actually like a wind that's fairly consistant at about 8-12 mph. I'd rather my scent be blown away than for it to drop and linger 360 degrees around my stand.
 
I hunt the same tree on the same funnel as I would any other time. I am sure that changes in wind velocity and direction change the odds to some degree. One thing is for sure.... Odds are zero when sitting on the couch.
 
They could be changing your odds from 90% to 0% if you hunt the wrong wind. I'd pick me another tree even if it wasn't 40 yards from where you're sitting now to hunt with a different wind direction.
 
Usually hunting funnels the wind can only hurt you in one direction.My best funell lies almost exactly southwest to northeast.Probably 80% of the time the winds out of the north or south.Hunt 1 side of the funell or walk 50 yards and hunt the other.Either direction its blowing out into agriculture fields.
 
Odds must be something above 0%. 6 in the freezer... Well probably closer to 5 now. Same stand. All conditions this year. When you are 30 feet above the ground, it would take some sort of phenomenal gale straight to their nose to give me away. There is diminished activity, no doubt.... But they still eat....and they still sleep. The wind doesn't stop it entirely.
