Hunting with a 91/30 Mosin Nagant?

I want to do some upgrades to it, and wondered if the synthetic monte carlo stock would make a difference in weight and felt recoil. Also i was wondering if the fmj round would be legal/effective for coyotes, take them down without leaving a baseball sized exit hole? Any input is appreciated.
 
Shamrock has a carbine version in a synthetic stock. Kick reminds me of a plastic stocked 30-06.
pretty sure its illegal hunt with FMJ but I don't have the book in front of me to look it up.
 
Plus they have the potential to richochet into the next county more so than a soft point or varmint bullet. The MN has a very user unfriendly safety too. PH

You can get Privi and Wolf ammo in soft points easy enough. Try Fox & Co being you are in Knoxville, or at any of the monthly gun shows. You wont find any at Wal Mart but I would bet occasionaly a box of Remington or Winchester could show up at BPS or Gander. If all else fails you can mail order it from Midway.
 
In order:

1) FOR GOD'S SAKE DON'T BUBBA IT! There's nothing to be gained with a synthetic stock, and historic integrity for generations to come to be lost. Every military gun I have ever hunted with with one exception (my Krag Sporter) has been As Issued. The extra weight makes 'em hang better offhand and soaks up recoil. Never have understood the logic behind spending money to make something worth less than it was before.

2) Ammo, Hot Shot (Igman) is OK, S&B/Winchester IMHO has soft brass, and Norma is about the best there is. I have been hoarding 7.62x54R brass for over 20 years and finally got some bullets today. Right curious to see how the Hornady .310 123gr do...
 
Yes they are. They accidentally threw a couple FMJs in but almost all of them are SPs.
 
Do what YOU want to do to Your rifle. If it was a rare model I would tend agree with previous post. I have a big collection of Military guns and personally if gun is all original I leave it that way. Why? Because they are mine and that is what I choose to do. I will build a sporterized rifle as long as it is not one that is complete and matching. That being said though, if it is a typical WWII dated model, dont worry the world wont miss it. If anybody complains see if they are willing to give you what you paid for it so they can put it in their own Musuem.

This attitude is why vintage military guns are so valuable; the Finnish Mosin that went begging for $40-50 15 years ago is now worth $400-500, the lowly Turkish Mauser that within the last 10 years only cost $30 now runs $200+, and I could go on. Mark my words: in 5 years a "non-matching" 91/30 will be a $250+ piece. Don't say nobody tried to tell you.

Are you trying to tell me a few sporterized guns have created such a shortage that is what drove up prices? I dont buy into that. All guns have seemed to increased in value in the last fifteen years (except mine), but not due sporterization. It is due to the fact there are no more to import. I dont disagree with you on the Mosins going up in price but it wont be until all the imports are exhausted, and with 19 million of them being made that will be quite a while.

Absolutely. Cherry-pick for bore condition and scarce years; a 1944 Tula 91/30 or 1945+ Ishvesk 91/30 already has significant collector value. Matching is always good, but is not the issue with Soviet/Finn collectors that it is with US and Mauser collectors. I wouldn't bury, though; long-term preservation would be in order. Oil regularly and keep in a climate controlled atmosphere.
 
I wish I had kept all of my 91/30's now. I had 4 each of the 91/30's and the m44's. I have 1 of the m44's left and thought about trying it out this upcoming season.
 
I Finally shot it today. Sighted in at 50yards grouping around 2 inches of a rest with a 7x32 scope and 10-20mph crosswinds. It was a lot of fun but for some reason the green (varnished cartridges) made the bolt really difficult to open. The other shells,(copper or brass casings) worked fine.
 
That (difficult extraction with lacquered cases) is pretty common. Best informed answer is the lacquer acts like a sort of glue. Use Boxer primed brass case ammo and you should be able to half your group size; 1.25MOA is not unheard of with quality ammo through an M-N.
