this spring while turkey hunting I found this shed
It's not a monster by any standards but has a little character. This year's rack should be a bit bigger too. Either way I would love to see and possibly kill the buck that this shed belongs to. I would make a good challenge and a good story if I managed to get it done.
So today I was scouting the area with Nimrod. It is a small, overgrown area with some trees but almost no mast trees. Except for one group of 2 or 3 mature oaks, which were dropping acorns. The leaves were a bit messed up on the ground from deer activity and there were a lot of cracked acorn shells on the ground, a small but very fresh rub, and a couple of deer runs and nearby bedding areas. I think I found the place to hunt with my bow, but I can only go in when the wind is coming from certain directions and I will be hunting on the ground and not a stand. The thicket is thick enough I could probably pull my bow unseen if I did it right.
Note I am not going to hunt there only for this one buck. I will shoot almost anything but hope that buck shows up. If he shows up and I don't get a shot off, I will probably be more selective and hunt that buck more specifically. Also if I manage to kill a doe or two, I will quit killing does and then only hunt the buck.
That is my plan, and I would be more than thrilled to kill a doe in this oak tree thicket with my bow, since I have never killed a deer with a bow. but the best thing that could possibly happen is if I find and kill that buck whose shed I found during turkey season. We will see how it goes and I am looking forward to opening weekend. I will be working saturday but hunting this spot on sunday, provided the wind is favorable.
