Just wondering how many of you keep up with hunting journal? I used to and was able to use the recorded information from year to year and feel that it helped. I haven't kept up for the last couple of year though. What information do you record?
 
I collect very detailed weather, hunt location, and observation data, but that's different than a journal. I kept a journal for years, and every now and then I'll read some of those old journals and pick up little tidbits of "interesting observations" that, at the time, I didn't know what they meant. Now I realize what those observations meant and have helped with crystalizing some ideas on the sequence of breeding behaviors.
 
Journel's are for teenage girls... :D You know kinda like a "satchel" or as some would call it...A man purse...

i started one last year but as season went on i forgot to keep adding. Bout to start another one since ive only been 3 times, i have kept a duck hunting one for bout 8 years now.
 
I started my first one this year. I write about deer sightings, weather, recent trail cam activity, and hours on stand. So far I've sat for 49 hours. I've always wanted to add that up. I think it will be neat for me (and hopefully kids) to one day read some of it.
 
As you get older, you will realize just how much comfort those "old words" are. Reading some of my old journals from years ago, is one of my all time favorite winter evening pastimes.

I kept one for many years, started in the early 80's as a young teenager, all the way through about 2005. I have quit since my boys have gotten old enough to keep me so busy i dont make the time to do it anymore. I too really enjoy reading over mine, as does my boys! I have picked up some realy helpful info over the years that I didnt even know i had!!!
 
Each year, for Christmas, my wife gives me a leather bound journal. It is always one of my favorite gifts. When I was recovering and could not use my right hand, I missed writing every night a lot.

It is 100% handmade leather, handmade paper and is stiched by hand and small enough to keep in my hunting pack. It is very rugged and durable and will last for years and years. I wanted something that is that way so I can go back and reflect/research and also it is something my kids and grandkids can have and it won't fall apart after I'm gone.
 
Mine are not just for hunting or fihsing. I write in mine just about every day. Since the G-kids came along, I find that good reading as well.

I couldn't agree more bowriter. As a person ages, they find connections to youth more important. maybe it's just nostalgia, but I think it's part of the aging process.

However, I also find it humorous to read my old theories on what observations of deer behavior "meant." Now, with more knowledge, I understand better what I was seeing at the time.

Wait until those hunting hours add up into the thousands. THAT is when information becomes interesting!

Bowriter, what injury were you recovering from? I noticed you have referred in the past to not being able to use a compound bow anymore.

two different deals but somwhat combined. The shoulder that I can't use is the result of old rodeo injuries. They have removed all of my rotator cuff but the shoulder is soup.

The loss of hand/finger use is the result of a virus invading my spinal cord between C-2 and C-4. That has come back about 90%. I still have bad days and usually you can tell it if I post. Words run together and a lot of typos. Still rehabing and improving some all the time.

had a little problem field dressing one this morning, could not get two fingers to grip the knife handle.
