Crazy as it sounds, in a lot of places (especially on public ground) the deer has gone to whoever got to it first regardless of who killed it. I've heard of this happening in highly pressured states like PA, NY, NJ, WI, etc.
True story. Years ago in a dog hunting club in NC, 5 or 6 of us were walking in before a drive to form a line of standers around a block of timber. A doe jumped up and 2 of us shot...one right after the other. The 1st shot came from a fellow that was there that morning as a guest; when he pulled the trigger she kept right on a'going. The 2nd shot was mine; a load of 00 buck to the neck and she rolled right there with nary a twitch.
We went on and set up the line, ran the dogs, and on the way back found where the deer had been dragged out by yep...the guest. He slipped back out during the drive, got the deer, and never even stopped off at the clubhouse or mentioned a word to anyone.
Didn't bother me that much I just figured he needed the meat way more than I did.

I hunt Allegheny National Forest in PA every year and its whoever put the deer down. Years ago my Dad shot at a big buck that was on a full sprint down a hill. He led it a little to far and bullet grazed the front chest. buck went down over and boom. We get down there to see another hunter standin over him. No harsh words we all shook hands and admired the buck (10 point). Now I wouldnt go leavin a big buck alone while I go to get a deer cart or help to drag out especially there cause I have had people tell me that their buck was stolen(buck was field dressed) with tag still attached so their season was over. Its a shame but people sometimes steal deer.

What do you do with a "buck pole" after you win it? Is it good for fishing? Can you sell it on ebay? Since he won it with the deer, do he and the deer have to split the winnings? What idiocy.
The root problem in that playground argument is the whole attitude that hunting is some kind of a competition.

Two stories from my time working as a refuge manager in the Mississippi delta.
First, large family property adjacent to the refuge owned by a old woman with two grown sons. It was well known that a very large buck was in the area. The "boys" were hot on his trail, but their neighbor killed him. The old woman called the neighbor late one night and said, "I hope you choke on him" before hanging up the phone.
Second, a large extended family hunted the refuge together every year. One year one family member shot a buck which ran a few 100 yards before being shot by another member of the same family. The two hunters recovered the buck and brought it to the refuge parking lot. In the parking lot, an argument broke out over which family member delivered the killing shot. The game warden pulls up, tries to intervene, realizes the argument is about to get physical, and since it was all in the family tells them, "You sort it out, and I'll see you back at the check station."

A hunter at chuck swan's first Archery draw this year shot a deer and followed the blood trail only to see another hunter loading the deer in their vehicle along side the road that it had come to , not sure if they worked it out or TWRA officer had to get involved. But felt real bad for guy that shot it, He had worked real hard for it. Just do not understand how some people sleep at night nowing what they have done.

I have always heard if u hunt on public land or any where that leaving your deer to get help always cut out his younger and keep it then u got proff it is your deer
A guy i know from my town goes to Illinois every year to bow hunt. 4 or 5 yrs ago he shot a really nice buck. Tracked it and found it and tagged it. Im guessing him being on a payed hunt he didnt think hed have any problems. He left the deer there to go back to camp to get help. He got help and came back and the deer was gone and someone cut his tag off and threw it on the ground.

i shot a 10 point a few years ago quartering away from me. i hit the deer hard blew out rib and shoulder bone all over the hill. when i was tracking the guy on the neighbors property started shooting... and shooting... and shooting... as i was laying behind a log taking cover, i couldn't help but wonder why someone would carry so much ammo in the woods with them. as i continued on the trail i saw him and his grandson across the property line with the deer i had shot. he had shot the thing from hindend to head along with both antlers. as it turned out he is legally blind, he can still see somewhat and takes his grandson with him to spot deer. the grandson was telling that he saw the deer sleeping when they were going home for lunch. they were both excited so i didnt say anything about me shooting it.
