Hunter safety course

My question is this, I have a little girl who has turned 10 years old. She wants to hunt but only with the a bow. I bought her a youth model bow a couple of years ago and she is very good with it. Our problem is, she is scared of guns, she can't and will not shoot anything above a .22 caliber. So now that she is 10 and will not fire a gun larger than a 22 how do I get her through a hunter safety course?

Check with the instructor and see if it can be worked out to use a .22 for her live firing. That is the standard for many classes, so it may be workable for her class as well.

If the shooting location doesn't have an adequate backstop for rifle shooting, she may need to go to a Field Day where they use the .22. Get in touch with Matt Clarey at the Region III office to get a location that doesn't use the shotguns.

I'm an TWRA HS Instructor and we use pellet rifles for people that can't handle a shotgun. My daughter is a very small 9 yr old and took the course this summer and had to shoot the pellet rifle. Like was said earlier, some locations only have a good enough back stop for pellet guns so that might be the only thing offerd. Let the instructor know at the start of class so they can be prepared for such.
