Ok, I am not a river rat, I was raised on bank fishing and was only on the water in a boat a handful of times before about 4 years ago. But I "fair bought" an old Landau 16' aluminum console jon/bass boat and traded for a 1966 Johnson Super Seahorse 40hp to put on it since the Merc that was on it was messed up, but she is not gonna get it done for much longer. Every time I turn around there is another problem with it, like today she would not start well or idle down without stalling, even though it ran just fine last time out. I know that it is probably just the carb, but the carb was clean as a whistle to begin the season and has only been used 2-3 times since then. Not to mention the fact that the steering is rigged in such a way as to not be able to tilt the motor up all of the way and is very difficult to adjust for shallow running.
I need to look at buying a newer, more reliable motor (probably later this summer or early next year, depending on side jobs) in the 30-40 HP range that either has power trim, or can at least be tilted all of the way up to allow beaching and adjusted more easily to run in shallow water. It does not have to be brand new or fancy (late-90's model would be fine) and I am not brand-conscious, but I am wondering where and what to look for in buying a good used motor. My budget will likely be in the $1000 range (max), and I will need to make sure that I have new controls, as well.
So, grizzled veterans of the big water, do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
