Long yearling = about 19 months

either that or a tweener that was born really late, like in the fall

got a pic of the horns? Also what month was it killed?

I'm not going to say I don't believe you, but I'm skeptical. :)

Then I'm going with a tweener....lol

I was about 85% certain on long yearling, because the permanent pre-molars appear very freshly erupted, and also appear not to be fully in line with the molars.....although they do appear firmly in place. There is only a small hint of wear on them, almost not discernible.

The molars also are very fresh with little wear. However on a long yearling I would suspect the back molar not to be so erupted.

I would wager he was late born, especially being killed in NOV, which is midseason. Looks like a very healthy buck. Unusual jawbone for such a buck.

Of course there are always statistical outliers and that may just be the case with this buck.
 
I think that buck can't be aged by toothwear because of his abnormal dentition. His teeth are not aligned normally, hence his chewing pattern would produce abnormal wear.

Excellent question. Although the abnormal dentition on one side could have caused extra wear on the opposite side.
 
I just don't see him only being 1.5 in the first pic of Jan. 2012. Plus looking at the chest depth for the October pic I can't see him only being 2.5 in that pic. The sequence of pics leads me to believe he had to be 4.5 when he was killed.
Did you get him on cam any for 2013 infoman?
 
Pass-thru is correct. The pictured jawbone would normally be considered a long yearling (about 20 months). However, first, the dentition is very abnormal, with the premolars erupting at a strange angle to the molars. This could cause unusual chewing behavior of the deer. Or, more likely, that is not the pictured buck's lower jaw.

The January pic is actually in the first week of November, 2013.
