How much ammo?

The recent thread about unethical shots and one shot/one kill made me curious about this, how much ammo do you carry into the field? I don't have a specific reason, but when I'm rifle hunting, I typically carry 8 shells. I usually hunt pretty far from the truck, often a mile or so, and it's easy to carry 8, 4 in the clip and 4 on my stock, much easier than going to the truck for more.

I am also typically a one shot/ one kill guy, but things happen. There's always the possibility of a coyote or 2. In years past I've had duds. I guess I'd rather have more than needed than to run out. However, if I ever use 8 bullets, I've had an exciting day in one way or another.

I'm guessing answers will range from the least being rifle capacity and the most being, just throw a box in my day pack. How much do you guys carry?

Whatever fits in my gun. Muzzleloader I carry one in the gun and 3 speed loads.

I carry 8 also, 4 in most my rifles and 4 in my pocket. 7mm mag 3 in rifle and 5 in pocket.

Muzzleloader I have 4 shots, 1 in the gun and 3 reloaders.

I honestly don't even know how many rounds my lever gun holds but I load three. If I shoot more than that, something is wrong.

4 in the gun. and there is always between 1-5 loose rounds in the bottom of my bag in case of emergencies. Never really, I just know they are there.

Muzzleloader. 1 in gun and 3 quick loaders.

Load up the rifle and carry several extra cartridges in my pack. Never know when you might need to fire a three round burst to signal for help. Three consecutive shots is a universal signal for help, or the sign of a lousy shooter. With cell phones and If you're not in the boonies it may not matter as much as it once did.

From the sound of it, everyone in the woods needed help this weekend. Every shot I heard seemed like it had 2 follow ups.

My usual load is 4 arrows and 8 rounds in my carry 45. On the rare occasion I gun hunt I load 3 in the gun. If I needed more than 3 with a rifle I wouldn't hunt anymore.

Muzzleloader is load in gun and 3 reloads. Rifle is 8 in shell holder and usually a few extra in pack. I carry extra for the same reason I carry a fire starter, never know what might happen. And as for the one shot one kill movie quote it's this. All hunters want it but things happen. For me I'm not perfect nor pretend to be. Yes I have made a bad shot or two. Why? Who knows maybe it's why it's called hunting and not killing. Maybe it's cause I don't lie about it nor pretend it didn't happen. But follow up shots happen a lot. So carry what amount makes you comfortable, whether it's 1 or a box.

One thing I've noticed over the years of this type discussion is that whatever the initial direction of conversation starts out in, the crowd will follow along with. For example if discussing how much money we make, if the initial guy starts out taling about how much money they have as a demonstration of his success, everybody will claim to be rolling in filthy lucre. On the other hand, if the conversation starts with an attempt to show how much the fella has struggled and how hard he's worked to get where he is, then the same bunch will all claim to also be barely getting by. A lot of psychology in this stuff if you ask me. :) I know we've had this same discussion here and a LOT of people claimed to carry 15 to 20 rounds - just in case. :D

Now I'll be totally honest. I never EVER carry less than what the rifle holds plus 12 more in my pocket. And I don't fall for that ridiculous idea that to shoot a wounded deer again makes you less of a man. If I wound a deer and it's still moving, I shoot like I'm in a war and it's shooting back. I want to put it out of it's misery as soon as possible if the 1st shot don't do the job. Shooting a gun well is not manly. Small children, petite women, even Richard Simmons can fire a gun just as well as a 250 lb super heavy weight power lifter. No matter how good a shot you are, things can go wrong and if/when they do, don't let an animal suffer because yo are afraid some slob buddy of yours will tease you about having to shoot twice.

Haha I'm with you I'll shoot a deer till it's dead. I carry as many that fill up the holder on my stock probably ten rounds

I've heard of a one shot society many years ago where they only carried one bullet. I think they all eventually were consumed by bears. In all my years of hunting I've never heard anyone put down someone for shooting a deer till he's dead even a so called insurance shot. A bullet is the cheapest component of a hunters equipment and there's no reason not to use them lavishly. With that being said, we should all strive to make quick kills. One of our clubs hunters shot a mature buck straight on and likely broke his neck but didn't kill it so he tried stabbing it with his knife. He thought that did the trick so he tapped its behind with his boot and the buck jumped up and ran off. He had to chase him down and shoot him again. Bullets are cheap!

The most I've needed is 3. A buck and 2 does. I'd like to use 4 some day. I usually have 6 in my Lever 30-30 . The pouch on the side needs 8 or it slips and slides. If I carry my single shot .270 just the 8 in the pouch.
