Side note: Is that a mineral block on the rock? It has always been my understanding and experience that the salt and minerals dissolve and leach into the soil and the deer eat the mineral-rich dirt. I have a few licks where I put the salt on stumps and deer eventually dig out and eat the dirt around the base of the stump. Do you mountain folks typically put them on rocks?
 
Yeah it's a mineral block. I put mine on rocks because there's plenty of them around. The deer seem to just lick the rock. I've not noticed them eating or licking the dirt around them.
