How many of you guys walked to your stand because you didn't have a 4wheeler? I did a bunch of walking before I got my first ATV. It was nothing to walk a mile or more to my stand. My first ATV was a 200 Honda 3 wheeler. Guess this was mid 80's. I know we hauled a lot of deer on it. Everyone in camp used it to haul their deer on it. That was also back when we used the little 2 way Radios because we didn't have cell phones.
 
Still do. Even if I had an ATV most of the areas I hunt you can't get there except by foot.
 
I have one but still walk, and where I hunt everything is up, steeply up. But, I can get there quietly and get exercise at the same time.
We had one person on the farm that would drive an ATV right to his stand, multiple times a day. FOr some reason he wasn't very successful...
 
I have an ATV but I rarely ride it to get to a stand. We will use a UTV to get everyone closer to their stands, but walks to the stand can still be a quarter mile or more. I would never drive an ATV all the way to a stand.

That said, I can say that having an ATV, followed later by a 4-passenger UTV, revolutionized our hunting, in both the work they can do year round as well as their ability to get deer out of difficult places. Before the ATV/UTV, there were places we wouldn't hunt because it would have been too difficult to get deer out of them.
 
I do the same as you BSK the biggest advantage to our UTV is being able to get deer out of anywhere!

I walk since I have no ATV/UTV yet. I intend to get a UTV someday once the farm is paid off. I can see a lot of utility with a UTV, not just for dragging deer, but as a general around the farm vehicle. Luckily my land is flat and laid out so that it's easily accessible with a truck to the point that you never need to drag a deer much more than 100 yards to a pickup spot.

One of my favorite spots to hunt is a little over a mile from the house so it does take a bit to get over there!
 
never had an atv. IMO as far as deer hunting goes, should only be allowed to use for deer retrieval. They can be priceless for duck hunting in Arkansas.
 
Never drove to stands
But I have drove truck up to stands and let Hunter out then drive off
never a problem, less noise than atv too

I keep Ranger usually at house during hunting season, mines more for work than hunting

With my place setup I have main ridges with roads than I walk out or drive park of the way
depends on where I'm hunting, last year DA and I drove out ridge, got out walked 200 yards, he killed one at edge of field
walked another 100 yards and he killed another going up steps to shooting house. And then walked to truck drove back to his got another gun too finish evening off.

My dad at 79 drives way back in the place and still kills deer

Deer hear trucks driving down the gravel roads along my place all the time so they are use to some of the noise and I set most of my TCs where I can drive truck very close or right up to them and leave it running to check them not a problem.
But again the way my place is setup and layed out helps I'm sure
 
UT has ATV gates on public land that limit access. Some are foot only, others allow normal ATVs and other are narrow enough to block out side by sides.

When I lived in UT, my goal was to get the heck away from every other hunter and just outwalk them deeper into the national forest. (Hunters are crazy there. Opening weekend is the lead story and it is called Deer Widow's Weekend.)
Anyway, I would be walking on the trail, a mile from my truck and would get passed by multiple, kicking dirst and dust, ATVs. I realized I could never get that far away from them.
My hunting buddy and I finally broke down and used them to get to remote areas, to then go on foot.
 
I don't and never will ride our side by side to the stand. I'll walk I do carry it with me almost every time but that's just in case I kill one. I'll continue to walk to the stand.
 
Use them for lots of hunting tasks but going to stand isn't one, not anywhere close anyway. I might ride one for a few miles then walk in the last 1/4 to 1/2 mile depending on situation. Retrieval is a different story and they are great to have!
 
I hunt public land with no atv or utv. My average walk to a stand is just over a mile or so. Let's just say I get a really good workout on the days I kill a deer. Carry a climber in and out and pull a deer out on a two whee cart.
 
We have a little over 4800 acres leased. You need a 4 wheeler to gain access to a lot of the remote areas. You cant get a truck or side by side to a lot of it. They are a great tool. BSK is right, they have made hunting a lot easier. They can get you close to your stand or right to it, retrieve most any deer and because of wenches you can load them by yourself. They make scouting easier by getting you to a lot of remote areas and we have used them putting out small food plots. Forgot, they haul stands right to area or tree where you want them. Now if I was a trophy hunter I might not ride them as close to some of the remote areas, but I hunt for enjoyment and we have never found Atv 's to be much of a hinderance.plus they make it so much easier on us old farts.
 
I don't have a 4-wheeler, always hunted out to where I was headed and always hunted right back to the vehicle.
 
Depends on the stand, I've got some that are close to a half mile walk from the atv and one where it's parked 10 yards away. The two most successful stands over the years (lots of our biggest bucks) we park between 10 and 30 yards behind them. The 10 yard walk is actually the most successful stand on the place for the last 19 years with 15 or more bucks killed 120" or better and that stand is looking down a 10' wide road that you actually drive down to get to the stand. Even more astonishing is it faces due South with the prevailing winds out of the North. All the others typically face North with most deer travels moving E-W.
 
I usually ride mine in except for 2 stands right behind the house. I always park 2-300 yards from my stand but often I drive by one to drop the kids off.

x2. I don't own a 4-wheeler
 
I have a Ranger. I will ride it in some of the remote areas then walk the last mile or so. On our lease we never use it. That can spook deer faster than anything.

Drive atv/ utv/ or truck from camp to area I hunt, then walk 400-500 yards in. Use atv/ utv for deer retrieval. If I drove my truck that particular hunt, I'll walk back to the truck, drive to camp, get atv/ utv & come back to drag out deer - takes half hour or so, perfect time for cool down period.
 
Our club covers 18,600 acres and it depends on where I'm hunting. If I hunt 1/2 mile or so from the truck I'll walk in. If I have to travel over a mile I'll usually ride part way in and walk the rest. I'll agree that if it wasn't for having an ATV to retrieve a downed deer I wouldn't hunt some of the places I do. I still don't hunt some spots for that very reason. I want a true hover board with a 300 pound capacity.
 
The lease I've been on the last 4 years is 3100 acres so no way I'm walking from camp to a stand that may be 5 miles away. I don't drive it to the tree but do like most and stop a decent ways away then walk the rest of the way. Growing up we didn't have ATVs and walked for what seemed like forever before getting to a stand. They're definitely great for retrieving deer from the woods.
 
I typically walk to the stand. If I kill one, I will track it, drag to field edge or a trail and then go get the 4 wheeler to get the deer.

This is what I do. In my mind I'm bumping deer if I'm riding in vs walking quietly to my stand.
