how many of u use a fishfinder as a........

a depth finder only..... to search for drop offs, humps, etc. i have a eagle claw 168 fish finder and it works really well reading bottom, but not so good for finding fish

maybe its because i have it in sesame street mode, you know the mode when it shows the pic of a fish when it detects something, or do i just need one of those XRGT1000-HD on a 10 year payment plan. :D

the only reason im askin is that a week ago me and a buddy were fishin in upper cordell hull in back of a small cove, when a deep v hull center console w trolling poles came in the cove and started motoring shore to shore back and forth lookin for the lost cumby titanic or something and moving twards us, obviously he was looking for rockfish, but man out of thousands of coves here he had to scan this one, we decided to reel in and leave before the tidal wave hits us. as we were leavin i saw that XRGT1000-HD fish finder on his boat and right when we were at the mouth of the cove there was another one, a same exact boat doin the same thing on the main channel, they must be striper guides...a rude one at that. :mad:

I use mine for both. Reading the bottom and locating fish. I saw a couple of boats as you described doing the same thing a couple of weeks ago on Nickajack Lake. This is not a Rockfish lake. We could not figure out what they were doing.

Depth and temp for me, as most of the time when you find suitable structure with the right temp, you'll find the fish. I will occasionally, when I want to entertain myself, go hybrid fishing and sometimes will use it to find baitfish the hybirds are chasing, but thats the only time.

uhhhh.......i dont think they were maping the bottom of c-hull with them ocean trolling boats if they were they have long ways to go.....i was told by a folgie here that c-hull was damed up without any land clearing so the bottom looks about the same all around,,snaggs.

but man, i would love to have one of them XRGT1000-HD fishfinders though, especially in wintertime. but on the otherhand it would'nt be fishing when you know where a fish is by lookin at a screen and droping bait. it would miss the adrenaline rush of catching a lunker and suprising you out of nowhere IMO.

well... for now ill be using it as i always have and try to follow the traditional fish patterns and lady luck!! :)

went back to the same spot after work today,and lady luck struck. got some fish sticks
spring fed cove,water is clear even when lake is muddy.

That is acutally what they were doing. There were four of them in total. I saw them putting in at Granville about a week ago. They work for one of the companies (Navionics maybe?) that make the cards for the GPS units. They are doing this so that the cards will show the contour lines of the lake bottom. My 2008 edition card does not include Cordell Hull.

ahh... maybe that explains the 52 inch flat screen that i saw on their boat, but the two boats that i saw had out riggers for trolling, or it could have been for co-ax cb antennas...?
if were mapping c-hull lake thats cool too,but if they did i wonder how far up the lake\river they went. i was at gainsboro area when i saw them.
u know its weird, i was fishin the caney today and i just happen to look twards the interstate bridge and saw two of the similar boats that i saw being hauled by a rig goin westbound , but i never seen a 18 wheeler on a boat ramp.
btw, the lake is flowing in some spots with the usual big trees floating down with it.

i would bet they only need to map the channels where the water stays in it year round,a satelite could map the rest of it while it was at winter pool & save a lot of time & $,mike243
