this is my first year chasing bucks. How long does the rut usually last. From what ive read there is an intense rut in november when the bucks chase the does, there is a lockdown period when the does come into heat and are bred, and there is another minor rut when the does that weren't bred during their first cycle come back into heat 21 days later. According to my research the rut is based on the daylight and is controlled by the pineal gland. The females will come into heat at the exact same time every year based on the amount of daylight there is .Same way we can make horses come into heat whenever we want by controlling the amount of daylight and nightlight they get. My question is how does the timing of this magical moment happen in west Tennessee and is it over by rifle season.
 
I've seen bucks chasing does in January. From what I understand, the does cycle until need and since parts of West TN is overloaded with does the bucks can't bred them all in 1 or 2 cycles.
 
Our peak in West TN is first week of December plus or minus a week. The pre rut starts around mid November and the rut peters out near the end of December but there are exceptions with the hot doe here and there.
 
We've got two fawns still with spots running around. So would that be late January breeding date?

"West TN" encompasses a whole lot of ground so not exactly sure where you're located but the above posts are indeed valid. The closer to the MS line you get the later it really gets cranked up and the deeper it goes into January. We've killed old bucks running does after Christmas and have pics of said chasing/trailing well into January.

Big Gun,
Considering 205-210 days gestation...those fawns were conceived well WELL into January or early February if my math is correct. And again, entirely possible in this corner of TN.
 
I don't know exactly how long it lasts but in my opinion the last week of November and the first week of December are the hottest in SW TN. If I had 2 weeks of vacation set aside for deer season every year that's when I would take it.
