Been raising a garden for most of my life. This is the first year I can ever remember that there have been no hornworms on my tomatoes. I'm not complaining, just wondering.
Anybody else seen this?
 
Opposite for me. I've had a garden for almost 20 years. I remeber only one year with hornworms. Blessed not to have issues with them
Growing up in Michigan, I remember them every year in my family's gardens

Now the squash vine bored is another story. Every year they get my squash, but not this year for some reason.
 
Yeah we didn't have any hornworms this season either. This year I bought a nice blacklight flashlight to help spot em quicker too.
We were the opposite of the previous poster about squash bugs. They were outta control in our garden this year.

this is the first year in the past six years to have hornworms. grandkids thought hunting them on the plants was fun.
 
I was also loaded up with squash bugs this year. I even had them on my tomatoes, which is a first for me.
 
They obliterated my tomatoes before I realized they were there. Lesson learned, I guess.
 
I had plenty of squash bugs this year.
The vine borer is different. It's the larvae of a moth. It bores into the roots and kills the whole dang plant

the UV light will make bug egg clusters glow like led bulbs too. i do a pest survey in my garden to get a count of the bad pests. kind of like IPM when i was a beekeeper.

not very many again this year but i dont use synthetic fertilizer except on corn anymore. synthetic fertilizers makes the plants bitter and attracts the bugs.

None this year. Last year, enough so that I started piling the corpses up as warnings.

Other than the weather, I have no clue as to why.

My daughter lost her entire crop of squash to these bugs. I wish I could learn more about them because I have never been able to grow a squash in Shelby County.

there are two main culprits for squash and both can be dealt with.
