I bought a box of Hornady factory loads. They are 150 grain SST in 308 winchester. They are the red plastic ballistic tips. I have shot 2 deer this year with this round and my nephew shot a deer with my gun also. The issue is the bullet is ricocheting after impact with the deer. All 3the shots were perfect broadside shots. Entrance was heart lung area on one side, exit eas through the liver on one and stomach on the other. I first thought the bullets were fragmenting after entry. But after skinning the deer I only found one exit hole but i did find a small piece of copper near the exit on one deer. The buck i shot Monday at 100 yards in a field had even a crazier path thru the deer. Right side entry between rib 3&4 then to brisket with massive bruising when i caped it out and exit out the other side between ribs. The strange thing is this. I shot the buck and waited about 15 minutes before going to look for him. I walk up on him and he is bedded up. He gets up and walks off slowly. I dont have a clear shot. I am in the field and he is about 40 yards in the woods. I watch him walk off in real thick thicket. I know my shot was on the mark. I could tell he was hit when I shot cause he bowed up and ran off from the field. I backed out and waited an hour. Went back to spot and found blood but not alot. Tracked him 50 yards from last place i saw him and found him. But get this, I gut him and when I go to cut through the diaphragm his stomach contents or chewd cud spews out. His entire chest cavity was dilled with it. I had a rough time with the smell but had shoulder length gloves and got it done. Bullet passed above the heart and with all the nastiness i could tell if i hit the lungs or not. I think the deer suffocated due to his chest cavity filling up. I think the bullet hit his esophogas rupturing it. Never had this happened in 26a years of hunting. Anyone had any of these bullet issues before?
