Some types of wood aren't so great for flotation after they've been in the water. Sealing it with paint/enamel will help. Another good option would be to drill out the core (to give it an air pocket) and then seal the ends.

Keep in mind that water-logged rope, bolts, and other "hardware" on these things will add weight and drag it down. I'd be surprised if you get enough buoyancy as-is to keep it popping out of the water very well, but I hope I'm wrong. It certainly looks cool :)
 
I might hollow out the ends, that is a good Idea. Then i can try turning some end caps. I did coat it with epoxy. And as for the line I'm going to try some old floating fly fishing line.
