Today I found something I never dreamed Id ever find! Now, yall keep in mind, Im an arrowhead hunter but a guy gave me an old Garretts freedom3 machine and ive been using it a little lately since the river is up and I dont have anywhere to rock hunt that is fresh so today me and the detector struck out to find something since it was so nice and I found this coin from 1784!!! Also a few other not so great coins, a horse shoe and this copper thing that im not sure what it is. To all you coin guys, did I find a good piece or are they common? The fact that its 230 years old just amazes me and if only it could tell its story of where it came from!!! Thanks for the look and fill me in on any info yall have on it and the copper cover, thats what im calling it.

Dude you are so freak in lucky lol thats a Spanish 8 reals, not uncommon but still worth around $100. Had to be dropped during the war

HAHAHa, I gotta be honest.... I would have been much happier with a Cumberland, heck even a half of one but this caught me off guard!!! Ive just been piddling with this metal detecting thing and to be honest, its not my favorite and cant compare to my arrowheads BUT, Im just amazed that I found something metal with a man-made machine that was produced 230 years ago. I figured a wheat penny here, a Civil War bullet there, No old coin so Ill take it! Ill trade it to ya for that purty fluted point you got though ;) Holler at me, I got a dandy unhunted spot we can go to.
 
Bahaha no! Lol I may hit you up being laid off and all I've gotta get caught up on some stuff and may even look for a rock here in the next few days. I figure by Friday I'll have another Cumberland to show you :)

Common? I'll put it to ya this way. I've been metal detecting since I was around 9 yrs old. I bought my first detector with my own money I worked for. I'll be 32 this yr. I've never found one of those coins.

They are more common up in the new england states...and down in South Carolina. But not common at all in TN.
 
I have been detecting off and on for the past 20 years and have never found Silver or Gold. That is an awesome find !
 
I been detecting for 35 plus years and let me tell you.. you have a once in a lifetime find!! Least 'round here... congrats!!
 
Thanks yall for enjoying and I have had offers from 30 to 85$ and It is staying right here in my house!!! I will most likely never find anything this neat with my metal detector now as far as rocks......I WILL FIND SOMETHING AMAZING. SOON!!!!! ;)

You never know what you might find, Im a finder, I love finding almost anything old, dont always "find" but I sure do walk my butt off looking! Ive found almost 2 bucks in change, mostly in mine and my neighbors yard, the oldes coin here being a 1904 penny!!! I had rockhound and his dad over once and the weather didnt work out well but I think they found some coins too! So the stuff is out there, you just have to go find it!!!!
 
Yep it really is a very fun hobby! I am like geezer I love finding anything old, I had rather hunt arrowheads as metal detect but its still a hobby. I did find a 1946 silver dime in his yard.

He was holding out on that 1904 Indian head penny :/

Youre right in a good spot with the big muddy in your back yard! Next time it gets low, head on out to the edge of town or so and go walk the banks where you can, if you see lots of flint chips or old looking mussel shells eroding, spend some time there, you might just find a point. I have a buddy that hunts rocks along the Cumberland river and he finds quite a few civil war bullets, coins and other items other than arrowheads so you just never know!!! Thats what keeps me going, What if!
 
I heard that if you look around Nonconnah creek, at your own risk because it flows through some hood areas, that there have been quite a few points found. I have a lease in Lauderdale that runs by the hat hie I may check out this summer.
