Wednesday was a beautiful day so I decided to check out the Chickamauga Lake catfish with son-in-law, Ross Roberson. My guide partner, Capt. Aaron Massey, has been having some solid winter success on trophy blues slow-trolling baits under planer boards. I've fished planer boards a time or two, but not much. Based on Capt. Massey's recent results, I decided I needed to give it a try, so I stole a page from his play book. Ross will attest, it works!!!
Ross's personal best blue cat to-date weighed 33 pounds. He more than doubled that when he boated this 72-pound Beast, 52.25 inches long with a 33 inch girth.
Winter catfishing is never going to be fast and furious. One fish per hour is about normal, which is about what we did - four cats in four hours. But there is going to be a decent chance one of those fish per hour will be the catfish of a lifetime. Way to go Ross!!
