The rain lightened up and I had a STRONG urge to go hunting. One of my friends that has never hunted wanted to come along with me. I gave him a call and picked him up.
We stopped to get gas. You can't go up in those remote areas with anything other than a full tank. You never know if you will get stuck and need the heater. After a quick stop at Hardees in Oliver Springs we wound into the mountains near Wartburg to my hunting spot. I am one of the guys on the TWRA permission list to hunt there (wanted to get the legal stuff out of the way).
With all the rain, there was no way we were going to cross the river. My blind is on the highway part of the property. I suspect with all the rain the hogs I've been seeing are trapped on this side. It has been the same four hogs on the camera. Across the river, the landowner found someone's else's game camera! Now my landowner has a SERIOUS issue with poachers. He cannot abide them. He took the card out and got a picture of the guys that were poaching. The thing I was interested in was that over there, there were huge groups of hogs and deer.
No matter, I had a captive audience of the four I've been seeing. Despite all my urging and pleading we didn't get there until nearly 6:30. Looking back on the camera the hogs had been there since NOON! We scared them off when we came in I think. At just before dark, my friend nudged me. I was almost asleep.
Sure enough the hogs were coming down the trail.
We shot one with my 450 Bushmaster and one with his Winchester 700 in .223. I used my .223 bullets because his weren't going to work for a hog. Just wanted to show him you "can" shoot a hog with a .223. Even then I went out and shot it twice with my pistol. The Bushmaster does not need a finishing bullet.
